Went upto a village near Newport Pagnell from Paignton and ~Google map gave me a different route to my normal route.

(up the M5, M42, M6 & M1, I normally go M5 M4 then via Swindon, Biscester etc.)

The journey went very well around 30 additional miles but no aggro with the ride that usually occurs from Swindon eastwards.

So a neighbour lent me her RAC sat nav 300, local. This had not been updated for some years and the CD is broken.

I have offered to update and have been to this web page http://www.66.com/rac/ and downloaded the update to my PC which appears to be free of charge.

Now, do I transfer to the memory card in the sat nav on top or do I clear the existing card and put in the above update from that web site to the sat nav?

the lady thinks it is also unusual that there is no charge for the uptdate, she thought it was as much as £60.

I'm not familiar with the RAC one but my Garmin upgrades direct from my computer.
I just connect it up via a USB cable and follow the prompts.
Bit unusual to get free upgrades, mine cost £74 for life?

Did you try the route 66, it uploads free?

I think you will find the Route66 are RAC specific and it could be that the downloads are free but you have to pay for the Unlock Code?
The £74 was for unlimited lifetime map upgrades for North America, UK and Europe which I considered to be good value?

I got the download to my PC downloads folder, Clicked on it and sent it to my desktop and it states download to one of those memory cards and no unlock code as been requested.

However I have done a system restore this morning and lost it. My computer had gone slow since download so dumped it.

however I am still getting windows updates I see and I definitely have no updates allowed but they are still getting in and I always blame them for my troubles.

(its going to the doctors shortly)

Critical security updates that MS considers could be a risk to other users of their software if you don't install them will in most instances be loaded.
They are trying to stop you being a menace to other users by playing host to rogue software pests that you could pass on or propagate to other machines.

Be very aware that not installing critcal updates may compromise your anti virus software.
My AV software (ESET) actually informs me when it needs a MS update file to provide full protection.
Often happens when MS automatic update is scheduled for some hours after AV has updated.

I understand what you are saying Chas. but in the past some of those updates created a conflict with some windows apps. etc.

So I dont use my pc for any financial transactions so I should not have to be lumbered with them. Others should accept them if they have the need and their security programs should work just the same?

Which indicates that those old Apps. are using older versions of files that have been found vulnerable or software shortcuts that are unsafe and may provide an exploit path for rogue software.

Sloppy coding or deliberate use of undocumented short cuts to gain performance or tricks by programmers can be a menace.

That's exactly the same as I purchased, allegedly for life (Whatever that means  ) I wouldn't call it 'good' value but there is quite a lot of work involved, also my first update had some errors which were not on the original version which came with the Garmin Sat Nav, and it took me over three hours to download the last update grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I think it's for the lifetime of the device. I've had mine for over 3yrs and they upgrade about every 3 months?
My previous one ( Garmin Streetpilot) used to cost £80 per region for one annual upgrade from DVDs.
I suppose upgrade times depend on Broadband speed, my last upgrade took about 15mins to download then about 30mins processing?
