Clearing through some junk in my garage I came across some plumbing bits that I'd boxed up before moving house ~10 years back. Along with various oddments, including the obligatory bits of copper pipe too short to be of any use, was a JG Speedfit plastic plumbing elbow which I bought as a 'just in case' because I was anticipating some joints in difficult to access positions. Anyway, the originally white connector now has a distinctly unsavoury nicotine yellow look to it - do they typically age like this?

It was stored in a cardboard box with no obvious solvents or volatile substances to explain the yellowing. I suppose you don't normally have this sort of fitting on display, so a minor cosmetic issue isn't really a big deal, but does it signify a more worrying breakdown of the plastic?

Hmm, if your plan is to keep it in reserve to be part of an emergency temporary repair then maybe it' s a keeper. As for a being a component in a permanent installation, I'd be hesitant about it. What kind of state is the O- ring in? If this has started to degrade then you may be storing up trouble.

To be honest, it 's probably destined for my 'cabinet of curiosities', the one that the council empties every Tuesday morning; I'm not sure I'd want to trust it to anything I'd put my name to.

, including the obligatory bits of copper pipe too short to be of any use,

Not true. There' stalwarts a use, if only to make ferrules for home made tool handles. Even half inch pipe will make a ferrule for a home made bradawl....

Oh well, that's put the mockers on my clear out! Back in the box with them, relabelled as ferrules...
