buying Kreg screws

I am hopefully getting a Kreg pocket hole jig and I'm looking at getting some screws to go with it.
There seems to be a huge range.
the length is obvious,
then a # either 6,7 or 8 (is this the width of the shank?)
then the thread, fine coarse or hi-lo, (hardwood, softwood/mdf, general purpose)
then the head, pan head or washer head. (what are the advantages of the different heads)

I am joining a softwood face frame to 18mm mdf, so i think I want 1 1/4" long, coarse thread, washer head - but what #?
