I would like to get my web cam working with skype if anyone can spare the time, please pm me your email address, and we can set up a contact acceptance.

I think my web cam and w7/64 bit is playing me up, I get a video picture of myself but my sister who is not computer orientated cannot see my transmission only the sound.

Checked all the skype settings.

Pleased to say cambournepete and I had a good connection and there were no problems with my set up. Its my sister and her mac or sky cheapie broadband.

Thanks to all who were willing and able to offer assistance. :)

Might be able to set a laptop and webcam up in the workshop next month, its an 8mb pixel camera so pictures might be worthwhile, what say you Pete?

Could be good for gettting some lathe working operations from experienced turners here?

I wouldn't mind learning myself. trouble is, who wants to Skype my mug on their PC!
Missus says I waste enough time on this machine already!
BTW what exactly is Skype? And I bet it doesn't work with XP Pro. :|

Skype is a VOIP system. There, now you know :? :? :?

Voice Over Internet Protocol, or you make your phone call using the internet. You use the internet system to make the call and if you are calling an ordinary phone, to yer mum for instance, it comes out of the internet and onto the normal phone line local to yer mums home. That way where ever you phone in the world you are actually making a local call. If you do what's called Skype to Skype then you just stay within the internet and you are calling someone on their PC. That's a freebe, plus you can make it a video call. I used it a while back to show my sister around our house here. She lives in Aussy.

I posted a message to benchwayse just now but it must have clashed with the two above so will post again.

Sykpe works with XP

You need a webcam and mike (they come combined these days)

You make contact with me which I accept.

If you are using a laptop it could be taken into your workshop (if you are using a router/modem) and you could or another could watch a lathe operation taking place and communicate live with operating instructions if wanted.

Do you have a webcam, if so contact me initially via PM?

To Benchwayse.

This is the skype screen you see on your monitor. If live you also would see the contact live on this screen at the same time.

You might have trouble with your misses wanting to use the computer for hours on a call. (its all free btw)

You don't need a camera if you only want to talk and if phoning somebody's land line you have to set up some credit.
We used it a lot when my daughter and family where living in Toronto.
Still got £9.83 credit - it expires if you don't make a call within 6 months but they warn you and you just make a brief call to your home number to keep it activated.
Also works on smart phones.

Yes Woody. I have a webcam. It's not installed at the moment though.

There's a webcam built in on my laptop, and Skype is installed, but it's only ever used for that purpose when my grand-daughter logs on.
(She fluttered her eyelashes - as they do - and asked if she could put an account on my laptop!)

I believe that Skype is a program that must be installed, as well as the web-cam, if I want to use Skype on my Desktop PC.

Having a "dusty" work shop ATM I wouldn't be happy taking the laptop in there, but in any case, it would be best to install the Logitech webcam so I could use it as a movie camera for a 'show around.' But not until the reorganisation id done.

Missus is NOT PC literate, and it's staying that way. I bought her a mobile phone two years ago. She rarely uses it, refuses to take it out with her, and when she does want to use it, she gets me to do the dialing! Precious she is.
:D

Right.. I'd better get this glory-hole cleaned up then, if I am going to be walking the mansion, with a camera attached to my head. (Must see a surgeon friend of mine, for one of those head sets they use), and a laptop strapped around my waist; like an ice-cream seller at the flicks! (Only a lot uglier!) :D
