So, I ended up with a spare day, Christmas shopping done and everything ready early. I needed a project. One I could do quickly!

Ever since reading Chris Schwarz's wonderful Anarchist's Design Book, I have meant to try out something along the lines of his Boarded Bookshelf. I don't need more bookcases, but I do need a TV cabinet.

I started with a rough sketch and some idea of dimensions

Glued up some 18mm spruce I had lying around into wide boards and planed them up on the low bench

Then ripped and crosscut to near size and shot them to exact dimensions, using Custard's trick again on the low bench.

Next I wanted to cut the housing joints to hold the shelves, so following the advice in the Anarchist's Design Book I clamped a guide down one side of the joint and cut away with a hardpoint.

If I do this again I'm going to have to find a better saw, the set on this is really wide and it didn't leave a clean cut.
I used the shelf to gauge the width of the housing and cut the other side and then removed the waste with a chisel.

Time to glue it together - using as many clamps in as many different ways as physically possible!

Clamped up the top support and kick into position and marked off the length

Then cut them to length. I tried the "knife line, make a trough with a chisel and then cut" technique for the first time here. I thought that I'd shoot them to fit, but I hit the exact length first time with the saw.
I glued the top support and kick into place and painted the sides with a couple of coats of milk paint.

All I have left to do is trim all the edges, break the corners and add some wax. I wonder if I'll get time tomorrow 8)

That’s great Ro. I really like how simple you kept it. Also like the guide method for cutting housing walls! I’ve only done that with a chisel before but your way looks much quicker. Looking forward to seeing it in situ.

How do you like that low angle plane? Been thinking about getting one
