    Digital calipers

Hi, I've just noticed in the paper that Aldi have restocked their digital caliper. It's a good tool, german made and at £8.99 about a third of the cost of elsewhere but they tend to disapear very quickly so speed is of the essence. Ray

New to turning (or at least wil be soon)

I agree with what has been said with one proviso. Once you have had variable speed you will never be without it. You mention the cl3/cl4. If you can afford the latter go for it. Ray

    lathe problems

Sounds like a good result Melinda. I think the problem is most of us have bigger lathes with brushless motors so it didn't occur to us. Strange really as in the days when I used to service my own cars a mechanic friend told me that if I was having trouble with the dynamo always check the brushes...

    lathe problems

Hi Melinda, I'm with the other guys on this one. A brief spell of cold weather should not affect a piece of machinery like this. The fact that it ran for 5 minutes probably means that it's another fault. It is not fit for purpose and you could elicit the help of the office of fair trading...

Have you checked the manual to see if it has a thermal overload switch? Ray

    lathe problems

Depends on how cold it's got. If the internal electrics have iced up running it for 5 minutes will melt the ice causing the electrics to fail. As it's only a mini lathe your best bet is to take it indoors and let it warm up and dry out. If that doesn't work check any fuses you may have or speak...

    Laminated Pen Blanks:

They're called dymondwood blanks and can be obtained from http://www.stilesandbates.co.uk/browse. ... 11/level/4 They can be quite spectacular but you have to be careful when squaring off the ends as they are prone to splitting. Best to sand the ends rather than cutting them. Ray

    Pinned/Pinless blades

Hi, Please forgive me but I am a fugitive from the woodturning section but I have a question on behalf of a friend. He has bought a scroll saw (make unknown) on ebay and now finds that it only accepts pinned blades which of course is very limiting. I seem to recall that it is possible to buy...

Debonding CA glue for pen blanks

Hi Jen, I have given up on using CA glue for pen blanks. It's very messy and you have to work too quickly (with me it's an age thing). I use 5 minute epoxy (similar to araldite) and plug one end of the tube with a potato plug to prevent ingress of the glue. It is also important to make sure...

Help: Bearing removal on a Union Jubilee lathe

Morgan, I haven't got a clue but this website might help with a photocopy of the manual http://www.lathes.co.uk/harrisonwood/page2.html I understand from others that the guy who runs it, Tony, is very helpful. Regards, Ray

Drilling pen blanks in the lathe - problem

When you are drilling the bit is held in tension and tends not to wander. If you withdraw the drill with the lathe running it will wander as you have relieved the tension. This will cause the screeching and more importantly may enlarge the hole. So you are right to stop the lathe and then...

    Advice on Lathe Choice

Hi, The lathe you mention is in fact a Jet lathe and they are well known for their build quality etc. However Axminster are no slouch either and you may want to consider the following: http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ax ... rod781099/ The main advantage is the full spec electronic...
