    Bronze Plane ID?

I just popped out to the shed to check - I think that must have just been a cat hair floating past the camera. The plane is in very good nick, apart from grime / patina and a very blunt iron. Jim

    Bronze Plane ID?

That's brilliant - thanks Jim. I've had a look at some of the other GTL threads now and it seems I have a bit of a challenge ahead!

    Bronze Plane ID?

Hi all My Dad has asked me to sharpen and set one of my Grandfather's old planes. I haven't seen a similar one before, and was hoping one of the board's human tool encyclopedias may have an idea of its age or origin :) In size, it's about an inch shorter than my Stanley 4 1/2. The adjuster...

    Finish for restored wooden plane

Thanks all. I opted for a couple of coats of 50/50 BLO and white spirit in the end, just on surface, leaving the frog & bottom of the wedge unfinished. Looks great and feels loads better in the hand (although it does smell a bit - read Jacob's reply too late) cheers Jim

    Finish for restored wooden plane

I'd read about this approach on another forum - but the linked article above makes perfect sense so I shall just treat the visible wood. My main worry was whether to finish the frog, as I have read elsewhere that it may reduce friction and therefore affect the wedging action. Perhaps the...

    Finish for restored wooden plane

Hi all. I'm in the process of freshening up an old wooden jack plane (made by Master, no idea of age but it was originally my Grandfathers so I would imagine it would have been made in the 50's or earlier). I don't think it has seen much heavy use over the years, but in contrast to my other...

    Chair repair advice

Sounds like an Inquisition tool, I could threaten the kids with it if they keep leaning back on the chairs.. Jeff, excellent site - many thanks for the link.

    Chair repair advice

Thanks again for the further comprehensive advice - I feel a lot less nervous about undertaking these repairs after all this input from more experienced folk. I'm just waiting for the Hayward book & a Woden dowelling jig to arrive (also a pair of wooden side rebate planes I "accidentally" bid...

    Chair repair advice

Oh go on then (assuming you don't want photos of the books) ... and to get back on topic a couple of chair photos. This is one of the better ones but you can see where the joins are loose, and an example of the ironmongery repairs. cheers Jim

    Chair repair advice

Funny you should say that - while looking for the restoration book on Amazon I found several other books by CH and also ordered the Toymaking and Woodworking ones (priced at 50p and 1p + P&P!). I'm sure they will sit nicely on the shelf next to my Underhill, Schwarz & Charlesworth books. I'm...

    Chair repair advice

Thanks again for all the replies and advice - hopefully one day I will be in the position to offer advice on the forums as well as ask for help. I now have a copy of Charles Hayward's restoration book on order - I will update this thread with progress photos once I make a start on the...

    Chair repair advice

Many thanks for all the replies (and the further detail I received over pm). These chairs have over time seated 4 generations of my family, I agree they deserve the best restoration I can manage so perhaps they can eventually seat a 5th (hopefully many years away..). I think I'm pretty much...

    Chair repair advice

I have a set of oak wartime utility chairs which I would like to repair. They've been in my family for about 40 years, my parents having bought them at an auction when first married. Apparently I'm not the first person to attempt repairs - holding them together there is a mixture of loose (as...

Holdfast Group Buy - May have found a UK Blacksmith

Mine arrived safely this morning - I've only had ten minutes to have a quick go before work, but they work perfectly. The only holes I currently have on my bench are above the skirts at the front, which makes the hole 5 inches deep and they still hold down very securely. Thanks!

    Bootfair Brass Infill

There's a picture of a hotley plane with similar, albeit much more substantial "ears" in Christopher Scwarz's blog http://blog.woodworking-magazine.com/bl ... Loopy.aspx Maybe you have accidentally picked up a prototype casting :D

    Advice on Workbench Top

Hello again. Thanks for the additional replies. Here's a few photos to clarify where I've got to so far: Workbench frame - mostly reclaimed palette wood & a couple of B&Q 2x4's http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae25 ... /frame.jpg Frame with plywood top laid on top...
