    Snapping pen blanks

    hi bought some hardwood pen blanks and drilled a 7mm hole through the middle but as soon as the wood goes onto the lathe and I begin cutting the wood falls to bits or snaps in half! have I cranked up the tailstock to tight? MTA.

    Getting spindles smooth and rounded

    i am turning beech at 18" x 3" diam for a standard lamp, How do i get a smooth all round, rounded spindle not a lumpy bumpy smooth spindle and how do I get that nice taper upwards. MTA SM.

    Borrowing books from the Public library

    I order books from my library online and am always on the look out for good woodworking books but when I get them they are all American books. They use obscure woods and the whole book is not suitable for the UK I wish the library would stock more UK woodworking books.

    Bird boxes in Pine.

    Been making bird boxes out of white pine, but it bows terribly before I even put a saw to it, I have used the bows (bowing out to the outside.) This is B&Q PAR pine. Been trying to sell them but it seems people will pay £15 for a terribly made box in a garden centre but not £8 for a hand made box.

    My Lamp project (first attempt at spindle turning.)

    This is my first attempt at spindle turning the top left is the bottom spigot for the lamp base. I tried to get the middle just right, but the beech is not quite round enough, any ideas please? Here is my lathe not sure if it can take a drill chuck for driiling inside.

    Drilling pen blanks square

    Since starting wood turning in Dec last year I decided to have a go at pens. I have a bench drill press with a 7mm bit and centred the wood and drilled down but when I looked underneath it was out a fair bit actually, so what did I do wrong, was the drill table out of square?
