    unusual Bailey transitional plane ?

£5 is a bargain. They're generally not highly desirable among collectors although this one is gaining some interest and bids on Ebad. From research, I think the early Bailey ones are a bit rare.

    unusual Bailey transitional plane ?

Yes after some research I'm agreeing the brass was probably owner modified. Looks almost period though and is quite well done (apart from the un clocked screws !) And yes it planes quite nicely. I lapped the sole a bit but it could do with some time spending on it. Has a sweethart blade. I have...

    decent hand plane wanted /recommendations

Agree with the above. A well restored, or just good condition, vintage Stanley or Record is often much better than a new off the shelf plane (unless of course you spend alot of dollar on a Le Nielsen etc) Also there's an infinite supply of spares and blades for these older planes. If you drop or...

    unusual Bailey transitional plane ?

Yes I agree alot of wooden planes were possibly self made but these Stanley Bailey transitional planes are from the Stanley maker https://www.timetestedtools.net/2019/02/19/roger-k-smiths-stanley-transitional-type-study/

    unusual Bailey transitional plane ?

Not seen any of these with a brass sole before ? The 'Superior Works' site which is very comprehensive doesn't mention anything either. I guess could have been added by a user.....

Restoration of a couple of Stanley #71 router planes

What to put on garage workshop worktops?

I've been using Valchromat on recent projects. It's basically a very high quality MDF that comes in different colours. Really nice to work with. More difficult to source though, Wickes etc definately wouldn't have it https://www.nationalmdf.co.uk/product/valchromat-mdf-full-size-board/

    back to woodworking

There shouldn't be too many defects / plugs in the higher BB grades of plywood although I guess it's near impossible to get one full side completely free. I had a big problem though in working with offcuts....... If they all come from the same 'batch' of sheets it's fine but different batches...

    back to woodworking

There's a CNC operation on a nearby industrial estate that makes ply furniture etc. They generate alot of offcuts which I'm able to buy at a very fair price. I've never bought full sheets from a supplier but looking at prices, an 8x4ft sheet of 15mm works out around £160

    Speed Awareness Course

There's alot of 20mph zones around my area, I drive them every day, often several times a day and have done for years. Very rarely do you ever see pedestrians crossing the road. A nearby village was given a 20mph limit about 12 months ago, and they've installed a zebra crossing with traffic...

    Speed Awareness Course

I would argue even outside the holiday season the main routes around Cornwall have increased considerably in traffic, but then that applies to traffic in general. And whats all this I keep hearing in the media that we're not building enough houses ? Cornwall is becoming one big building site !

Drill press and table saw advice

I empathise with you on living in a more remote area of the country. I've had similar problems down in Cornwall, struggling to find old school machinery because I detest the shop-bought imported stuff. Was lucky to get a small Startrite 175 table saw which does very well for small medium...

Estate agents Thats such an old chestnut though The Cornish are not deliberately selling their houses to rich buyers from up country. Houses come up for sale because of all the usual reasons.... family deaths, people moving, job relocations, and so on. Property goes up for sale on the open...

Getting gloss finish with danish oil

I generally use shellac sanding sealer before wax. Dries very quickly, you can apply several coats in a short time, and of course it sands nicely, giving a nice smooth base before waxing. Having said that I've also used wax over varnish and even Danish oil. Just make sure it's fully dry and...
