Post a photo of the last thing you made

I've given it a couple of coats of clear satin varnish to be on the safe side but as I'm an old fart it has every chance of outliving me.

Occasionally I could smell the booze when cutting but as for drinking the stuff? I'm a brown beer man myself.

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

Just an ordinary tealight candle that I swiped from herself then a rub with some blue towel as it was spinning. I did the outside first but was terrified to cut deeper on the inside as there is a line across and I was afraid that it would burst as I dug deeper.

First bowl. No idea what the wood is but it was hard work. The finish was achieved using an old candle.

Recently I saw an article about making a chair from old barrel staves and the idea of slouching out in the garden appealed so off I went and about an hour later twentyfive old barrel staves were in the garage about to be mutilated. The end result complete with mistakes.

    advice for beginner turners

As another newbie I'd like to say think Safety Safety Safety. Start with thin 2" inch ish diameter wood as a large heavy six inch log which is way off balance will want to try and launch itself across your work space. Make sure every clamp is tightened down before you start and keep the...

    First turned item

Thanks guys, this afternoon it was back into the wood for another stick as my youngster wants me to have a go at a stool for one of her pot plants but first I must put a better edge on a chisel. Onwards and upwards hopefully.

    First turned item

After destroying a few pieces of wood I thought it was time to have a go at turning something a bit more challenging. It's dog rough but I'm almost happy with my efforts.

    Two bowls from one blank?

I saw a video recently with a curved chisel or whatever it is called which was very similar to this. Bowl saver.

    Old Moth

Thanks for all the info. It's been fascinating reading about all the other models including the attachments and instructions. They must have been quite a machine back then. The SAE 30 oiling will be a regular duty every time I use it. The old ML8 reminds me of school days and there's...

    Old Moth

The next time I top up it will be a heavier oil as the 5/40 I used almost fell through. Going into town this week to see if I can get some chisels if they have any and if not it will be on line keeping away from cheapo no brand name rubbish.

    Old Moth

For some time I've been thinking of buying a lathe so I waited for the January sales to come along and got as far as clicking away and filling the basket but I hadn't got the courage to take the final plunge because I had a little doubt. What if I really don't take to turning. After...

    Fallen tree

To my very amateur eye it's a beech tree, it's a long way to the house with a wheel barrow and I doubt I could lift the remaining section but I dare say that there's a few dozen egg cups or salt n pepper pots in there then. I have a cunning plan.

    Fallen tree

Recently I was out for a winter walk and a tree had recently decided to let go it's grip of mother earth and had crashed across the footpath but somebody had already removed the offending section of the trunk from the path. Around six big chunks of beautiful wood lay at the side of the path...

    A complete newbie

Thanks guys, I'm just back in with a nice new Stanley sharpening system as they call it and so this is the start of a whole new journey. No intention of buying power tools just yet as I would like to get some practice doing a good few mortice and tenon joints. Funny how it is still in the...

    A complete newbie

G'day folks. As the title says I'm a complete newbie to woodworking having been a bit of a petrol head all my days. Had a go at retiring but got bored awfully quick so back doing an hour or two a day until later this year. Somehow or other I found my way here and I like what I see. My...
