    Efficient Lipping/Edge Banding

Can anyone offer any time saving tips for applying solid wood lippings (say 3-6 mm thick) to veneered MDF in terms of glue type, clamping methods and trimming? Thanks Joel

    Flush Handles

Can anyone recommend some chrome/steel inset, or flush inset handles suitable for fairly weighty pull-out under stairs storage units? Thanks Joel

    Business Insurance

I currently have a "Tradesman" policy with Axa which is a reasonable price and covers public liability and tools. However it doesn't cover finished goods, goods in transit or business interruption. Can anyone recommend a good policy? I've had a couple of other quotes but they have come out...

    Photography

I am contemplating investing in some studio flash lighting and a digital SLR in order to photograph work for marketing purposes. My hope is that this will be cheaper in the long run than paying a professional to do it, and give me more control over the quality. Does anyone have any thoughts on...

    Question for Hammer C3-31 Users

I've had a C3-31 for a few months now and have generally been getting on well with it. I have encountered one problem though - when I remove and then refit the crosscut fence I keep having to adjust the cam stop on the sliding table to keep it cutting square. I've come unstuck on a couple of...

    Book Review?

I've just been rereading Alan Peter's book and came across a reference to Franz Karg's "Modern Cabinet Making in Solid Wood." Has anyone read this, and if so, is it any good? Joel

FOR SALE - Makita 2012nb Thicknesser & Axminster Extract

I'm buying a combined P/T so my Makita 2012nb thicknesser (240v) is now surplus to requirements. It is just over a year old and comes complete with the Makita stand. The extractor is the Axminster ADE 1200 with fine filter bag and is also a year old. I have modified the latter slightly by...

    Used Machinery Dealers

Can anyone recommend a second-hand machinery dealer somewhere not too far from Bristol? Thanks Joel

    Fiddes Clear Glaze

Does anyone have any experience of this finish? I need something reasonably hard wearing and fairly easy to apply and was thinking of using Mega - but I want to apply a Liberon acrylic dye first and I'm concerned a water-based finish will lift the stain. Thanks Joel

    "Nicholson" Workbench

I've just finished making this workbench from Chris Schwarz's book (I didn't photograph the build as this would infringe Schwarz's intellectual property). If anyone is considering building one I can report that it is a very sturdy, stable bench and that the leg vice works brilliantly, providing...

    Dust Classifications

Can anyone enlighten me as to the difference between dust class L and M? I realise the L stands for low and the M for medium, but what sort of dusts fall within those categories? I'm thinking of getting a new extractor and don't know which class to go for. Thanks Joel

    Making a Roubo?

Having just read Chris Schwarz's workbench book I'm feeling rather dissatisfied with my small, rickety old Sjoberg bench. Does anyone have any bright ideas though as to how I might an 8ft bench top on a 5ft bench without a surface planer/jointer? Joel

    Edge Trimming with Plunge Saw

I need to trim about 1mm of the edges of a couple of 18mm thick oak boards. Normally I'd just use a hand plane but I've injured my wrist - can I use a rail guided plunge saw to do this or will the blade deflect taking suck a thin cut? Thanks Joel

    Shop Made Router Mortice Jigs

Apologies if this subject has been covered before (didn't manage to find much using search function), but I was hoping to persuade forum members to share with me jigs that they have made for cutting mortices with a router. I have been using a drill press, but don't find this very satisfactory...

    Clean Cross-Cutting

Given that I don't have a table saw and my mitre saw has limited reach, can anyone recommend a good way to cross-cut wide, solid wood boards to final dimensions? Thanks Joel

    Saw Sharpening - uneven gullets

I've been practising sharpening an old Tyzack tenon saw, which is 13 tpi, using a rip profile. I've been lightly jointing the teeth and then filing to remove the flats in order to try and get teeth of an even height. The problem is I keep ending up with very uneven looking gullets. Can anyone...

    Stropping Problems

On a couple of occasions recently I've found that after stropping a freshly sharpened plane iron I've ended up with small nicks in the cutting edge. Does this mean that the strop is contaminated, perhaps with previously removed burrs embedded in the surface? Any advice would be much appreciated...

    Dovetails with Mitred Edges

I've just had a practice go at making a dovetail joint with a mitred top edge and ended up with a significant gap (in the mitre). Is there a secret to getting this to fit well? I suspect my mistake was to gauge the shoulder lines slightly less than the stock thickness. Thanks Joel

    Diamond Stones

I've been using waterstones for a while now (mainly 800 and 10000 grit) for sharpening plane irons and chisels and I'm perfectly happy with them, but I need something I can use easily away from my workshop. Can anyone recommend a diamond stone or two that might be suitable? I am tempted by the...

    Glazing for Display Case

I've been asked to make a table-top jewellery display case with a glazed lid and wanted to ask some advice as to the best way of fitting the glass. My first thought was to fit it into a groove as if it were a wooden panel - if the glass is toughened there's a minimal risk of ever having to...
