    Why has my table cupped?

After checking several items in my house made from timber I seem to be averaging 9.5% when it comes to MC. The timber planks I still have in the house range from 11.5% all the way upto 19%. I was surprised to still get such a high number on 1 of the lengths. I will keep checking them for another...

    Why has my table cupped?

I have just bought a moisture content reader, they are not a lot of money but seem to be a good tool to have. So in days or weeks how long is it recommended with these types of softwoods to leave for them to acclimatise?

    Why has my table cupped?

Thanks for replying guys. The timber was in my back bedroom for 4 days before I used it along with 2 other lengths I had bought. Something I have done to them has caused them to cup as the other unused lengths look fine. Robgul- After watching a video on youtube some time ago this guy who...

    Why has my table cupped?

Can someone help on this? I bought a 4.8m length of 200mm x 45mm C24 softwood from my local timber merchants cut it into 3 and glued it together. 24 hours later I removed from clamps and give it a good sanding. Then I fixed 2 2x1 inch support pieces 6 inch from the ends to the underside. I then...

    Which side should I use.

Thanks for the replies. I really do want to take the surface with the stain back to see how it looks so I think that's the way forward. Once that is done I'll decide then which to use for the top. I do tend to rush things, such as not going through the grits far enough as I can't wait see how it...

    Which side should I use.

Paulrbarnard- It seemed as though where there was imperfections the oil kind of made it look dirty and unattractive. I did put second coat on well earlier than 6 hours, could that cause a poor finish? Recipio- Are you referring to the brown mark, wont that just sand out?

    Which side should I use.

I am making a coffee table for my sister and after convincing her to go for something different I bought a 2 inch thick ash slab from a timber yard. After a load of sanding using 100/150/180 grit I applied danish oil, 3 coats in total. A day later I looked at it and wasn't really happy with the...

    Dirty looking finish on walnut.

It's just annoying that if I have paid for the sapwood I have paid approximately 40 to 50 pounds for timber riddled with woodworm that is now sat on the ground in my garden getting rained on. When I applied the oil after final sanding of 240 grit the oil immediately turned the sapwood a dirty...

    Dirty looking finish on walnut.

This is the piece that I bought, as can probably be seen the cost for this was £150. After measuring it I cut it into 3 lengths of 34 inches with the intention of probably making 3 coffee tables for my family members. Woodworm signs are present in patches from top to bottom and on both sides of...

    Dirty looking finish on walnut.

Thanks for the replies The picture I attached was from the unplaned side of the slab after I had planed it and sanded it. It was only when I got home did I then realise the suface was littered with worm tunnels. I thought they may sand out but my efforts were getting nowhere so I flipped it...

    Dirty looking finish on walnut.

Can someone help me with this? I have just bought a walnut slab section with the intention of making my mum and myself a coffee table. Firstly I sanded with 120 grit then 180 and finally finished with 240 grit. I thought that when I applied the natural danish oil it was going to really bring...

    Orbital Sander under £200.

Can someone recommend an orbital sander that is quieter than most other sanders, holds a 5" disc and is priced upto £200. I currently have a bosch orbital sander priced at around £55 but unfortunately the other day my friendly next door neighbour jokingly commented about the noise I was making...

Is this a fair price for oak boards?

Mal-110, there is a place in Wigan called Ramsey timber, I visited it 4 weeks ago but when I asked to take a look at their stuff they told me that I couldn't due to health and safety reasons. I also tried to email sales for a price list but I think they just discarded the email as it was from a...
