    Makita 2012NB Rollers seized

I haven't used this thicknesser all winter - too cold! I went to use it this morning and found that the wood wasn't being drawn in properly. Inspection showed that the yellow plastic rollers have seized. I guess I'm going to have to dismantle the roller assemble, clean, and lube, unless there is...

Hand planing hardwood - bad idea?

Just because something is well established and traditional doesn't mean to say it is still the best way. Someone told me some years ago that the person who has, say, 50 years experience probably has only 5 years experience that is now 45 years old.

    OK, sorry about that.

    Stupid injuries

Don't wear loose woollen gloves when using a mitre saw. I knew this, but still did it. I had gone to my garage/workshop to tidy up. It was February, and cold, so I wore some gloves. When I had finished I thought, 'Why don't I just finish cutting those pegs.' Thump! What was that. Eurgh. And...

    Resawing - Japanese saw options

I have that saw, and I have been using it this afternoon, on Siberian Larch. It rips well, and I have no trouble cutting straight if I cut between two lines rather than on one. Can be awkward to start, but once it's going it's fine. I could try it on Oak tomorrow.

Squirrels. Love ‘em or hate ‘em?

So does the smallpox virus, but we are better off without it.

"Parts near End of Life" message

I have used 'compatible' ink in my Epson printers for years, and never had a problem. Also , the quality of photo prints has always been good, and I'm fussy.

    Drying (a lot of) firewood

I much prefer to use an axe to split wood. I love the sound the wood makes as it splits. I groan when I see people on TV using an axe. They have no clue how to handle one.

How to clean paint off 16thC internal timbers without damage?

My understanding of beams in cottages is this, and I may be completely wrong. The original occupants of a cottage would have been poor, and would not have been able to afford to paint them. What they would/might have done is limewash them to deter insect infestation. I believe it was the...

    Misheard lyrics

Eddie Cochran's 'Drive in Show': I bet my pe*is to a candy bar. It's peanuts of course. Showing my age with this one. Eddie Cochran was just great.

    I love being retired.

The best bit about being retired is not having to go to meetings and listen to some complete a...hole drone on about some half-pineappled 'quality improvement programme'. The point of their pitch not being to improve things but to try and become more visible to upper management.

    Strange Chair

Not sure if this is the best forum. Does anyone know what kind of chair this is. Some have suggested a nursing chair, but I don't buy that. It's too low. You'd struggle to get out of it. I don't think the legs have been cut off because if you extend the line of the back legs to a 'normal' length...

Has anyone tried/have the Stanley RB5 Block plane

I had an RB10 some time ago. It was dreadful. I wouldn't bother.

    weird electricity consumption.

I confess I haven't ploughed through the whole thread. We had a problem with 'mystery' electricity consumption. We tracked it down to the fact that the oven was drawing about 120 watts even when it wasn't being used. We now turn it off at the wall switch.

Pest proofing my garage / workshop

I get mice in my garage. I have, or had, two traps: one a 90 degree 'traditional. the other some plastic easy set clamshell thing. The other day I saw that the plastic one had sprung, but nothing in it and it was 8 feet away from where is was set. The traditional one was nowhere to be seen. I...

    Sickle

If you are cutting grass with scythe or sickle it must be sharpened with a coarse stone. This is to give you a sort of saw edge, not a smooth razor edge. My wisdom comes helping on a farm in the late '50s and working as a labourer for the Forestry commission in the mid '60s.

Which resin to fill letters in a sign?

Milliput is very easy to sand, but I don't know if it will polish. Probably. The thing with polishing with fine grades of wet and dry is that it has to be done wet, and that would then probably raise the grain on the wood. To smooth the wood you would then sand with a dry paper which would spoil...
