    at the moment l am still thinking this through but should start exploring in a day or two. Bought the book that 'bugbear' mentioned and it arrived this morning. There is a lot to look through there. I will post some photos of what l do but thinking of epoxy resin to fix in the loose newel.

    drying pen blanks

    I have used the microwave for pen blanks 1min on full power and left for two hours and continued till dry, l had the blanks in a paper bag. Think the thing here is that each microwave and wood species seems to be different. Just make sure you do not dry them too fast or they will split

    That is oak most probably Turkey oak by the colour and size and it also looks splated which is what is probably throwing you down the wrong path in identifying it. We have a lot of turkey oak where l live

    Carbide Cutter

    The guy from easy tools says that the carbide bits he uses are standard ones but he changes the rake angle. Has anyone measured the angle of the square cutters that are for sale especially the box of 10? I have a diamond wheel on my tormek and it touches up these cutter just fine

    it looks like cherry to me. yep cut the pith out as it will crack along it. why not rough turn the blanks and seal the ends it will dry a lot quicker that way

    I have a couple of sawmills that use chainsaws and also hand rip cut. Professional (bespoke) ripping chains are sharpened to 10 or 15 deg, l find the 10 deg works better on hard woods. One word about bought ripping chains is that the do not have as good anti kick back links as cross cutting...
