Part way through Saw horse build, first build

Thanks for the kind words and advice everyone. I think I'll try and see where I can get a cheap saw and plane, and a couple other tools like a chisel. A mitre saw is still definitely on the list though

Part way through Saw horse build, first build

I may do that, but in the meantime, if I can get it to a usable state, I can at least use them to make new ones.

Part way through Saw horse build, first build

I was going to sand it down so it's level. If a saw and plane is better, then I'll go with that. I guess I don't know well enough to use the right tools yet :D Here's a poor mspaint drawing of what I'm going to do I was going to lay a plank of wood across like this, and screw it down onto...

Part way through Saw horse build, first build

As you'll be able to see from the images, my woodworking skills leave a lot to be desired. I have absolutely zero prior experience, and this is my first ever project. I used a circular saw to cut the pieces, and many of them didn't cut as level as I would have liked. I think my...

Best place to get wood near me? (Telford, Shropshire)

I've got no idea what wood I'm supposed to be using, or if it should be treated or untreated. I guess when I go to Potter's I can pick their brain about these things.

Best place to get wood near me? (Telford, Shropshire)

I was going to go off Steve Ramsey's old video. He says you only need 5 2x4's, but I don't know how long they are supposed to be, or what the UK equivalent is.

Best place to get wood near me? (Telford, Shropshire)

Great Barr Sawmills is actually further, but quicker since I can hit the motorway the whole way there, about a 40 minute drive apparently. Potter's is apparently only a 50 minute drive. I'm not sure what wood I should get though. What would you recommend? Anything cheap and cheerful will do...

Best place to get wood near me? (Telford, Shropshire)

The closest place on the sticky would be Dawson Brother's Timber, which is a 45 minute drive. I wanted to keep the drive short as well, but I guess I'll just head there anyway if that's the case. Thanks

Best place to get wood near me? (Telford, Shropshire)

I've got some basic tools, as I was going to start my first project of two sawhorses. I'm stuck on where to get the wood from though. I looked at homebase and the like, but I don't know if it's the right kit. I'm just looking for wood that is fairly cheap, that I can afford to make mistakes...

Working for free for learning and experience?

Just got a call back from the college, turns out they're booked up until April. Not sure if it's worth it at all now, since after 3 months, I'd hope I've learned enough to not need a basic carpentry and joinery course. Whereabouts do you mean? The one in Telford? Also, whatever I need to do...

Working for free for learning and experience?

Well apparently all I need to bring is £25 for material fees, good footwear, a pencil, and measuring tape. It specifically says

Working for free for learning and experience?

Yeah, another fella mentioned that to me, but thanks. I didn't know something like that existed, but it seems like it'd be a great idea. Well I'm going to ask anyway, on the off chance, but like I said, it's a best case scenario. (Just asked, and the guy said he's currently got two young...

Working for free for learning and experience?

I figured that would be the case anyway. Being able to get experience and learn in a workplace was always best case scenario, and I've signed up for CITB as well, and hopefully something will come of that. If I don't manage to get into a joinery to learn, or a proper apprenticeship, I'll...

Working for free for learning and experience?

The only reason I'd be working for free, is because I have zero experience at the moment, and I asking someone to pay me for what I can currently offer leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I do see what you mean though, and I wouldn't make things for people for free, but when it comes to helping...

Working for free for learning and experience?

Well the first place I'm going to go to, which is the closest, is a small operation that seems to only have 2 workers, but there could be a couple more maybe. The others around here don't seem to be very big, but I'd have to take a better look, but that's pretty much how I planned on going about...

Working for free for learning and experience?

I live in Telford, Shropshire Yeah, I figured. I'll ask anyway, as I don't mind giving free labour even if it's just cleaning and lugging stuff about, and just shadowing, and once I've done the small course on carpentry and joinery, maybe I can help more. I don't expect to get paid anytime...

Working for free for learning and experience?

That looks hella complicated to me as it is, but I guess that's because I have no experience. I'll have to look around to get a better idea

Working for free for learning and experience?

Okay, I'll definitely disregard cash converters then. I'll probably stick to Facebook marketplace, and post in the marketplace on here then. Where's the best place to look for a plan to make a decent workbench?

Working for free for learning and experience?

Thanks everyone for the advice, it means a lot. I can't find MikeG's trestle project, but I get where you're coming from El Barto. I'll just see if I can find a simple project, like a workbench, and see what I need as the basics to get it done. I'll just have to travel the internet and local...
