    Stain/Dye

Greetings from Canada Without boring anyone with my current project I’ll just jump right in. Does anyone know of a product that will stain or dye wood completely through? I’m using toothpicks (birch) and when I cut them I need the wood to be stained a darker colour. Please dont suggest...

    Wood flour

Thanks to all you guys for your advice and help. As stated I had never heard of wood flour until yesterday. I’ve been wood working for over 40 years and never knew I had a shop full of this item, known to me as fine sawdust. It’s a great marketing name for a common thing.

    Wood flour

I’ve never heard of this product until today. Could someone please advise me whatever you know about it. I m building an 18th century wood model of a ship. I need to fill in approximately 10,000 tiny (.5 mm) holes with a wood product to simulate the trennels. Would this product fit the bill...

    Strange Request

Thanks for your response. I’m not a fan of the sticks but they might be the only solution.

    Strange Request

Thanks Paul. You have a keen eye. Your offer is greatly appreciated. Trying to find some pear in Ontario Canada seems to be almost impossible. I will message you on SOS. John

    Strange Request

Thanks for the spice tip. Never heard that one before. I have lots of cherry. Do you think it would blend in with the pear okay?

    Strange Request

Yes, the powder. It belongs to my cousin. I’ve never seen it before.

    Strange Request

The only piece I can find is 200 miles away and about 2 board feet. I’d buy it but with shipping costs it is like buying gold. Thanks for your response.

    Strange Request

Hi Guys I have a strange request from across the pond. Living in Canada pear wood is almost an unknown (at least from the suppliers I have used over the years). I’m building a 1779 wooden ship model that is made entirely of pear wood (from China). It is very expensive. After planking the hull...

    Spinning Wheel

Thanks for all your help. Marcros thanks for your offer but I live in Canada. I will do some experiments to see what works best.

    Spinning Wheel

Thanks for your input. Large wheels are 1 3/4inches and small ones are 7/8 inch. Leaving 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch respectively.

    Spinning Wheel

Hi guys I bought some wheels made out of maple from a supplier. I want to “dig out” the inside to just leave an outer ring, to look like an old train wheel. Planning on doing this with a forstner bit. Now the question: what is the best way to hold said wheel still in my drill press while I...

    Table top

Hi guys Finally going to replace the crappy table top that came with my radial arm saw (some kind of pressed fibreboard I would say). I’ve purchased the best 3/4 inch plywood I could find here in Canada. What do you suggest I put on this for good protection? Varnish jumps out front but...

    Dados

Not sure who the host was on the utube feed. I just found it hard to believe that a part of a machine could be outlawed. I live in Canada so maybe the table saw police are a bit behind and will seize my set up in the future. I’m sure I could lose a limb with a lot of the other equipment I have...

    Dados

Hi guys I was watching a wood show video and heard that dado cutters are outlawed in the UK. Is this true or was the guy in error. Just had to ask as I had never heard this before. John

    Sticky situation

Thanks guys for all of your help. I learned a lot. Gorilla glue is a different type of beast. I tried the heat method for a long time. No good. Couldn’t even open up a seam anywhere. Emailed the company and they had no suggestions. I eventually came up with another risky idea. I soaked the...

    Sticky situation

Hello from Canada. I need some solid no going back information please. I m building a very expensive ship model. The key word is very. Although I’ve built many models over the years I managed to make a rookie mistake on this one. Please advise how to get some extremely delicate wooden parts to...
