Looking at the Stig's lovely pieces reminded me of a similar piece I did about 6 years ago, I called it my Phoenix Vase, which was hewn and turned from a piece of Hawthorn, lots of searing of the wood with a blowtorch! The small bowl to the right of the vase was my first attempt at resin where I...

    Shed treatment.

As a final coat I have used this stuff on my summerhouse, its like painting with water! Nasty stuff, so observe all the usual PPE advice https://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-water-repellent-seal-clear-5ltr/57474#product_additional_details_container

Hi Pat, love the expression "smelly stick holder" (aka Josticks). Well done for saving that knot in the bowl wall

Hi Pat, always handy to have these small utility bowls kicking around. I' m quite amazed at the absence of any radial cracking with the pith included on all four bowls. Mind you I have noticed a similar absence in the Leylandii (Cypress) pieces I have turned over the years, where the pith was...

Hi Pat, why don't you have a go at making a steady rest? Its pretty simple to make and there are numerous videos on YouTube to show you how. The roller wheels are easy to get off Ebay. I forget which design I used when I first made mine some years ago.

Buying cheapest wood for woodwork practice in the UK

I cannot remember he last time I ever paid for timber. Here are my 3 top tips for getting your hands on wood. 1. Freecycle: By far the most productive method of acquiring wood. Obvious items from Freecycle, many include Furniture, but I have often found that after speaking to people who you...

I easily remove my bowl nibs by using a small piece of low grit paper 40/60. If you don't want to risk your fingers in a goblet, then just glue a piece of 40/60 to a piece of sponge/foam on the end of a wooden stick.

This is a piece of Alder salvaged from a tree felled after a Winter storm about 6 years ago. In my experience Alder rots pretty quickly, but can include some beautiful grain and spalting. From the first photo you can see how 'punky' the wood was. No amount of tool sharpening will remove the...

This small little fella is turned from a piece of Damson, that has been hanging around for years. I knew things were not going to be straightforward as a number of large and deep radial cracks were visible. Some of the cracks were turned out, but others remained. In keeping with the colours on...

Sorry Pat for not picking up this earlier. That is a great question and one that I did'nt ask myself. So I attempted to mount the piece using that method. I could soon see that the concave interior surface of the piece would not allow sufficient surface area between the spigot and bowl to...

Part 2 Because the wood was relatively dry, the ‘Kiln Gods’ were good to me . However, if you want to ensure cracks will not develop, you need to check your piece regularly.....and a good job I did!Three incipient cracks had started to develop from the centre of an included pith. Because, the...
