    Sawmills/timber sales

There's a lad on Ebay who is based down in Devon. Had some nice pieces from him. His Ebay name id is 28dai28. Contact him through ebay as he seems to do the timber as a side line to his tree surgeon work.

    Motor upgrade for Draper lathe

Thanks for replies. As rightly said earlier. The issue is not so bad now after a year of learning. The sharp tools and not trying too hard helps :) I will look at upgrading the lathe at a later date. Not for an increase in power as such, more for the speed control from an electronic speed...

    Electronic speed control conversion possible?

Why are the pulleys an issue ? There would have to be a new one on the new 3ph motor , but as long as the correct size is fitted to give the speed range required from the motor side. Then the variable one on the headstock would stay at whatever you leave it. You may need to remove the handle to...

    Another possible bearings question

When the motor was hot was the bearing areas hot as well ? If it was the headstock bearings putting excess load onto motor , I would have thought the bearings would be hot too. It maybe that the motor bearings are at fault. You could remove the drive belt and run the motor on no load to check...

    Need adaptor making

Thanks for reply. It maybe that I am wasting time trying to get this done. But I hate to see a chuck sat there unused. I suspect I will just use the other 2 chucks and maybe see if its of any use to anyone else. I suspect the rest of it is compatible with the same make chuck for a different...

    Need adaptor making

I don't have a metal lathe and someone was going to make this for me. But has not got back to me. So If anyone has access to a metal lathe and can make me an adaptor boss for my wood lathe and chuck, I would be very thank full. I am willing to pay for the part and postage as long as not too...

    Motor upgrade for Draper lathe

Thanks for the replies. Your both right . I think I am rushing things a bit. I need to use what I have a bit more and learn to fully utilise what I have in both gear and knowledge. The latter being the limiting factor. I will be visiting a local pro turner and so hope to pick up a lot of...

    Motor upgrade for Draper lathe

I have a Draper WTL90 lathe with a. 37kw 240v single phase motor. The motor seems somewhat lacking in power. So I was thinking of either getting a larger single phase motor or going to a 3 phase motor and vfd unit. I wondered if any one else had upgraded a Draper, and if so what was the motor...

    Advice for a newbie.

Thanks for replies. I didn't have a lot of option with grain as it was a bought blank. I know I need to sharpen my tools better and more often. But I was eering on the safe side and tried not to mention that as had been warned its a bad discussion topic. :) The information being given is very...

    Advice for a newbie.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any recommendations for sealer ? Will one type work on all woods ? I have ordered some mineral oil for bowls etc used with food. So will try that next time. Most stuff upto now has had a coat of Danish oil then bees wax. But this has been put on at the very end...

My lathe is ticking :( DML305

Looking at the drawing I would say 2 areas look like the possible causes. First is the what looks like possibly a locking pin for the shaft ? Parts 17, 18 19. If it is a locking pin then is it fouling the recess where it should fit on every rev ? Second is parts 7 and 22. Don't know what its for...

My lathe is ticking :( DML305

if the speed is changed via the pulleys does the noise speed up/down. Try same to make sure its not at motor side. (fan cowl damage sounds like that when fan blades catch) You could also try removing belt and manually turn output shaft to feel for any binding or roughness. Sorry, just read all...

Turners retreat, Harworth any recomendations ?

Don't know if this is the right place for this post. If not please delete. Just to get peoples opinion or see if similar had happened to them. I have just been to Turners Retreat as I needed a chuck for my first lathe. I had looked on the web site and decided on a cheaper chuck £99 and an...

    Newbie mistake.

I bit the bullet and went to Turners retreat and bought a chuck that fits. Ended up with a Charnworth Viper 2. It is not the best but will do me for now. I got to admit though to feeling like I was being taken for a bit of a ride when I bought it . But I better post that story in another...

    Newbie mistake.

Having been to my local engineering shop, I am told the TH38 thread is M20 x 1.5. So I need to see if there is a 3/4 x 16 female to M 20 x 1.5 male adaptor out there. I only paid £35 for the chuck and screw chuck. So it may be a case of just starting again with the correct sized chuck and see...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

this is the last and first thing I have ever made using a wood lathe. I still have to sort out the bottom, but for my first attempt I am more than happy. It didn't smash to bits or fall apart :) It is only about 4 ins high. But its the first go on a wood lathe and using the tools that came with...
