Workbench Build aka Paul Sellers style

I built my bench about 6 months ago in the same style as a total newbie, though I think yours is looking better! The hardest part of this build for me, and the least emphasised in Pauls videos and blogs is the fitting of the vice. Paul makes it all look very easy and simple, but I actually...

    Tool Chest - Wood Selection

Thanks chaps. I was thinking of making something more permanent. I don't plan on moving my tools around, but a cabinet would take up too much space. Fairly small chest on the table at the back, sort of like the Mike Pekovich one on Fine Woodworking : http://www.finewoodworking.com/2013/06/...

    Tool Chest - Wood Selection

Hi all, Now that I have my bench and some completed small projects behind me I want to make myself a tool chest to store my nice tools in at the back of the garage. My problem is wood selection. According to the internet pine is the thing, cheap and lightweight and strong. Most chest seems...

    Rutlands : Pack of 10 - F Clamp 300mm £29.95

Tempting, I don't have many clamps at the moment. How do people know what clamps they need? :D These look nice too: http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+parallel-j ... 4+M_DKBC31

    To plane? or to buy?

Happy to be wrong here! As I did say in my disclaimer above I'm pretty new at this myself. However what I will say that is from all the "online" advice I have watched and read (from Paul Sellers to the Fine Woodworking chaps) they all seem to say get the no.4. "You can do everything with the...

    To plane? or to buy?

If you're going to use power tools for squaring and flattening then probably a no.4 and a block plane would do to start with! No.4 is a standard smoothing plane. 51/2 too big to use as a smoother. I do everything with a no.5, no.4, block plane and sandpaper. :) can get more fancy planes later.

    To plane? or to buy?

I think it depends on your available time and your priorities. I myself have no space for machinery (half of a single garage). I have a bench, small assembly table and a small 12" bandsaw. I also have relatively limited workshop time. Maybe an hour or two in the evenings after dinner, and a few...

    Eye protection

I generally stick with Uvex glasses both at work and at home. They have a variety of shapes and sizes and if you can try them on you'll find a good pair without having to go the goggle and steamup route. The ones I have a few pairs of have fairly large lenses leaving almost no gap under the...

    W16 at NEC

I was tempted, but It doesn't look like there is too much relevant for the hobbiest? Probably not worth the 2.5 hour drive for me :D

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Thanks muchly folks. Tricky business this woodworking lark, but very enjoyable. Yeh I think you're right about the too little stock. Hmm I hadn't noticed that. Hopefully as they are for a small dog it won't be too much of a problem. Maybe I'd better warn the brother-in-law not to stand on...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

New here and new to woodworking, so thought I'd post the couple of little items I have made... Paul Sellers style workbench, modified slightly to fit in my garage. Bench Ash picture frame for my wife, bit tricky to work with, might not try that again for a while... Frame First attempt at...

    Wood Fading/Darkening In Sunlight/UV

Thanks Custard! That table is really nice, probably a little beyond me at the minute :D I'm planning on saving it for the right project anyway. Got a bunch of bits and bobs from Goulden Hardwoods a few months back and it's stickered in my garage, walnut, sycamore, cherry etc. Might be...

Dovetail saw - Pax or Lie Nielsen?

I have the Veritas and the Lie-Nielsen dovetail saws and thought I'd venture my opinion for what it's worth, though I am a newbie. The Veritas is nice and cuts quickly. Get a little bit of blow out on the back, and it is a little awkward to get started. Feel like I have to be a bit aggressive...

    Wood Fading/Darkening In Sunlight/UV

Interesting thread. My workshop is pretty dark (dingy garage) and I have some air dried English Cherry that I picked up rough sawn. Planed it all flat and it is very pink! Wonder if I should bring it in the house so it gets some light for a while? Dave
