    homemade jointer

Something that took me a while to twig (maybe I'm just slow!) but you need to run the board in concave face down. if it is convex you will not be able to stop it rocking as you guide it through and you will just keep getting bent boards out. Sorry if this is obvious. Just thought I'd mention it...

Cast iron outdoor chair refurbishment - threaded inserts and machine screws?

I had a disappointing experience with the threaded inserts. The inserts repeatedly broke off at the head where the hex key engages to drive them in. Or sometimes the insert would completely break in two lengthways. My inserts were from screwfix which might explain my bad experience. where do...

    Table Saw replacement fence advice

I've built Steves fence as well and it's excellent. I used mostly 5-6mm walled steel sections so it is rock solid. You may need to think a little first about how to attach it to your table saw as each saw mounting and dimension can be slightly different. Mine was solved by using 2 more lengths...

    CAD - Computer Aided Dilemma?

My Tec drawing teacher described the difference as: 3rd angle is you look at the object and draw what you see. 1st angle is you look at the object and you project what you see to the other side. -Neil

    Workshop Lighting: What to use?

Hi I work in my garage as well. One of the biggest upgrades in lighting I found was to buy a tin of white emulsion paint. If your walls are exposed block or brick then they will suck out a huge amount of available light. If you can paint the ceiling as well then that will also add dramatically...

Self levelling compound on a tamped concrete garage floor

Good luck Roger, I hope it goes well. :D I've always wanted to do this but have been put off by the thought of emptying out the whole garage in one go and storing everything outside while it's done. Let us know how it goes, perhaps you will inspire others by your success. =D> -Neil

    Birch ply or structural ply

Thanks everyone, it looks like any reasonably hard ply will do. But as recommended, I think I'm going to reinforce the base with either a double layer of ply or extra noggins to increase the support under the ply. I've also ordered the elements tile backing boards kit which comes with some water...

    Birch ply or structural ply

Hi All, I am refitting my bathroom at the moment. The new cast resin shower tray instructions say it must be laid on an 18mm thick birch plywood base. Only not that many merchants state what the wood is anymore. Wickes sells a normal plywood and a softwood structural ply. Would the softwood...

Tap & die set advice, please.

I know it's an old thread but if anyone is still looking for an HSS set these are very nice as they have three taps for each size progressively taking deeper cuts into the thread. They also have the tap wrench and correct matching drill sizes kept in the same box. Ruko set HTH -Neil

    Record Power vs Axminster Sander

I bought the Record Power one a couple of years ago and it's been fine. The thing that swung it for me was that I couldn't tell from the axminster photos if the table was supported from both sides. If it's only one side then it will obviously deform under pressure. The record clearly has...

    Flush cut saws.

Screwfix sell a 7 1/4" Irwin Pull saw that is very good IMO about £12. It's very similar to the lidl but with just one blade. The larger Irwin pull saw is rubbish though. HTH

    Planner thicknesser??

The forces from a table saw can vary including firing the wood up and towards you. You would have to find a way of making sure the wood cannot work free at all or it could become a missile. The forces in a bandsaw are all down into the table if you let go of this wood it is unlikely to be fired...

    CMax's garage conversion workshop build.

Hi Cmax, great build. Are your 2 lights arranged longitudinally along the middle of the garage? I would turn them sideways so they span across the short side of the garage and allow for 4 lighting strips. I have 4 in my single car garage and I also painted the walls white which makes a huge...

Hex shank lip & spur drill bits

If you like the Festool approach. The regular Festool twist drills (not Lip & Spur) have a grub screw in the bulbous part of the body to allow the drill bit to be replaced. You could get a set of those and replace the bits with a Lip and Spur drill of your choice? You would have to also grind a...

    Triton MOF001 height adjustment

Were you locking the router off with the lever when cutting to avoid it creeping heights under use by vibration? -Neil

    Safety reading glasses

I see you've already bought some new glasses but if you have a normal pair of backup glasses I use these safety goggles which fit over my regular glasses. Uvex Goggles They're cheap and work well imo. Could be useful as a backup plan? -Neil

flattening a slab what router bit??

I believe the replaceable cutters are usually made of a harder carbide as they don't need to be brazed onto the router bit. So as well being replaceable they give a better cut and longer lifetime. -Neil

    Cutting to the line

Paul Sellers often shows this technique on his youtube channel. He scribes with a knife. Then uses a chisel on the waste side to cut a knife wall. The saw then drops into the knife wall and the cut is started perfectly on the line. Not that I can pull it off as easily as that though. :oops...

    Good news!

Looking at the photos Steve I can't see any rubber grommets to stop the metal casing cutting through the cable. Is this perhaps what happened? -Neil

    Hikoki, Hikoki. Sayonara Hitachi.

I saw HiKoki products on Toolstation last night. I noticed the name and product looked very similar to the Hitachi offerings. My first thought was that this must be some cheap copy cat product trying to pass itself off as a Hitachi. Therefore one to avoid. PS I thought Metabo were a quality...
