MDF fixing suggestions for assembly of unit.

I watched the video and got some great tips, so thank you. Never considered doing pocket screws before, but I might give that a go. Like you point out, it doesn't matter if you are not going to see the hole. I also like the solution when drilling holes for the shelfs pins. In the past I have...

MDF fixing suggestions for assembly of unit.

I tried, but I made such a bloody mess of it lol. In the end I just wanted to get the project finished, that was the solution.

MDF fixing suggestions for assembly of unit.

Decided to go down the softwood pine route and ditch the idea of using MDF. It's going to take a lot more time making the panels, but that's what I know and enjoy. I will be left with a piece of furniture that will last for years. I'm not a master furniture maker, but this was my last...

MDF fixing suggestions for assembly of unit.

Good point, I didn't even think of that. Probably better to take 50 - 100mm off the top and then add some decoration to cover the gap.

MDF fixing suggestions for assembly of unit.

In the past, I have constructed all of my projects out of softwood pine. I'm now looking to make a floor to ceiling cupboard with sliding doors for the small bedroom out of MDF. As I don't have any workspace at my house, the unit will be constructed in my mum's Garage where I do all my other...

    Types of wood for panels

Think I will go for the ply. Thanks for all your help again. The unit will be painted white. The unit is 1800mm H x 400m W x 400m D My daughter is 4 and it's for all her toys. Her room is tiny, so we need to be clever with the space we have. The unit will have four doors / spaces. This...

    Types of wood for panels

Building a storage unit for my daughter. The finished piece will be painted. This time I want to rebate some panels in to the frame for the sides of the unit, more of a decorative feature. Since the unit is to be painted would you recommend plywood sheeting for the inserts? I'm still...

My first wood project box is showing gaps between the joins

Thank you for the tips, some very useful information there. When I built the box the last thing on my mind was the wood actually moving when finished. As others have said and now yourself, I will make sure any future panels are not screwed or glued and are free to move within some sort of groove.

My first wood project box is showing gaps between the joins

Yes the boards / strips are fixed. In reply to the previous post I have since invested in a router and router table and will know if I ever do a project like this again.

My first wood project box is showing gaps between the joins

No it didn't plane the surfaces, the wood was square, as good as. I bought the wood at stock sizes as I didn't / dont have a table saw for cutting long lengths. I did however sand them when cut. Because it was my first proper project I created a lip inside the box, the strips where glued and the...

My first wood project box is showing gaps between the joins

I made a large storage box for the kitchen over a year ago. It was my first wood project. Yesterday I noticed gaps between the joins. I also created the inlay panels by using strips of wood at the time to try and create the effect of one large board, but I also noticed gaps appearing here too. I...

    Bedroom Cupboard with Sliding Doors

I do like this idea, it's just matching the paint to go with the walls.

    Bedroom Cupboard with Sliding Doors

I have a sliding mitre saw, and other general tools to make basic furniture. I don't have a table saw, router or anything fancy like that, so for example if I wanted inset panels I just overlap the wood behind the frame, which is not truly inset. It does the job, obviously if I had router I...

    Bedroom Cupboard with Sliding Doors

Just need some advice. We have such wasted space in our bedroom I was thinking of building a floor to ceiling cupboard along the whole wall with sliding doors. We have so much stuff, it would be nice just to put everything in there and forget about it and keep things tidy. What I was thinking...

Things I'm learning as a novice

Go easy on pencil marks, go easy on filler, because the biggest pain for me has been the sanding at the end. On. the next project, I might sand the pieces as I go along.
