    Fence on BAS 260 swift

Hi All (bas 260 swift owners), I was looking at this small bandsaw in a shop here, and the fence stood proud of the table on the far (non attached) side, something like 5mm. Is this normal? Cheers, Duncan

Tormek motor is 'bobbing' a little bit

My Tormek makes a very slow periodic sound: 'whung',....silence....,'whung'. When I took off the leather wheel to look at the motor, it became clear the motor is moving up and down a little bit in a periodic motion. It sort of makes very small jumps. Should I be worried and/or is there...

    Laminating a Tiller

I bought Sipo (utile) 'dark' and yellow cedar strips 'light' for my new tiller. But have not found the time yet to put it together. Sapeli looks better than Utile but I found out it has much tension in it:boards warp and twist like crazy. I dont know what happens if you laminate this together...

    Dust masks/respirator

I have a 3M half mask, but stopped using it and went back to the paper ones. The rubber of the half mask pressed down on my skin and caused a rash, despite keeping it meticulously clean. The paper ones are much softer and did not cause any problems. Also note that some half masks come in three...

    bandsaw capacity, e.g. basato 1

Hello Mick, thanks for responding. I would like to know the thickness it can easily saw, for a not too hard wood like sapele. I think although 100 mm will fit underneath the saw, it will probably only cut 100mm styrofoam, and not 100mm white oak  Duncan

    bandsaw capacity, e.g. basato 1

In all the bandsaw descriptions I miss a sort of 'capacity' indication, like it will saw e.g. x" of pine board, or x" of Sapele. Why is this not mentioned? I am looking for a small bandsaw, no need for resawing, basically to build ship models and small boat accessoiries, and was considering...

    Norton flattening stone

I have the flattening stone too. Unfortunately, it does not stay flat itself. :( So you have to periodically flatten the flattening stone itself..

sharpening Veritas 'snug plug' plug cutter

Thanks Rob! I must have made nearly 500 plugs already. These are such a massive improvement over the stanley cylindrical cutter I used to have. Really, really great! Regards, Duncan

sharpening Veritas 'snug plug' plug cutter

Hi, My Veritas 'snug plug' plug cutter is no longer producing shavings, merely dust. Is it possible to sharpen such a four teeth plug cutter, and if so how should I proceed? Or should I have it sharpened? Regards, Duncan

    freehand drilling, at an angle

Hello, I need to drill a 1/2" hole at an angle of 45 degrees through 1/2" Mahogany. Unfortunately the part can not be put under a drill press, as it is 24 feet long and boatshaped. :D Can somebody point me out how to achieve this, without chipping or breaking out the edges? Kind regards...

how much tear out is acceptable

Thanks, It's about a mm. But the only thing I can do is sand it and use epoxy resin to make it smooth. Cannot sand a mm off.. Duncan

how much tear out is acceptable

I generally buy my wood machined to size, but often (and in the last order of some exotic African hard wood I keep forgetting the name of) there is serious tear out, that will not easily plane, scrape or sand out. I was wondering how much tear out you would accept... Regards, Duncan

experience aftermarket grinding stones for Tormek

Anybody experience with the coarse after market grinding stones for the Tormek like: http://www.fine-tools.com/Tormek.html (scroll down) I found I need to regularly take out the diamond tool on the original stone to keep material removal continuing when regrinding the very tough A2 of the Lee...

    Yacht varnish

I have a boat with a lot of bright finished wood, al finished in yachtvarnish. My brand of choice is Epifanes , on a basis of epoxy resin. However, in the boating scene the way to keep your bright finished wood in good condition is putting it under a (canvas) cover. If your varnish job stays...

Regular Lie-Nielsen blade in a Stanley block plane?

I bought one of the three slot blades from the Dutch Lie-Nielsen representative Baptist in Arnhem, The Netherlands. www.baptist.nl They do stock the 11 slot blades for the 9 1/2 I think they are expensive compared to UK dealers though

Benefits of swapping Stanley Block planes for LN...thoughts?

Ditto here. The LN blade is significantly thicker than the stanley blade. I don't know why, but it works much better than the original. I also have the LV block and apron plane and the LN 102. I feel the LV block plane is too wide for my (not so small) hands. Prefer the stanley with the LN...

    3m micro abrasive paper

I have ordered from the US yesterday and it is already shipped. My main reason for going back to this scary sharp is the fact that the micro abrasive lasts so long, and that I dont have to mess around anymore with spraycan glue. We got this demonstration from Ted Moores, at a woodstrip kayak...
