Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

Not sure what I started there, but what is this gallon, pounds and cubic feet you speak of? :P  I do know that I bought 25Kg of rocks, 15kg of sand and 15kg of aquatic soil so before I even put in any water I have over 50kg in there! Of course that will replace some of the 180litre...

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

Yes, there is a metal frame around the base. Surprised by how "flimsy" it seems really - it's only 15mm wide all round the edge and that's it, no cross supports or anything. But I did a leak test when it was delivered, on my garage table, and it was fine. Bit worried that the surface wont be...

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

I'd have to get the carpet and underlay (which is heavily stapled if I remember the carpet fitters correctly) up to get into the trapdoor to the underworld. It's an old house and the floorboards (real wood!) are pretty solid. Not sure where the joists are but there's only one place the tank can...

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

Hello. Well, finished it and it's, erm, rustic! AKA - I got fed up of the sandpaper tearing and gave up, rubbed on some Danish Oil and called it a day. As per advice I used coach screws - 160mm for the sides and 100mm for the top and bottom, with 24mm washers... the thing ain't falling...

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

Wee update - wood purchased as per first post, chose 90mm posts (they had planed ones, for pergolas, so a bit less work to tidy them up.) I'm gonna go screws, just for the hell of it - put my past issues with them behind, and I have some spare wood to experiment with size of pilot hole, etc. ;)...

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

Oi! Keep your in-jokes off the thread! :P  I take it he sweeps the floors after you lot are done then? I could do with one of those - is he tame? :) On topic - this is like a minefield! Looking at screws (probably not allowed to link them - I'll admit I haven't read the site rules...

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

If I was to use screws, where would I put them (i.e. how many)? A quick Google and it seems they go up to 100mm which would be fine for fixing the top to the legs but no use for fixing the legs to the base, if I use 100mm fence posts! There may be bigger ones - I'm guessing I'd need 200mm? I'm...

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

Yeah, I was figuring that standard 10mm dowels would be fine for creating the various surfaces out of the timber but too lightweight for the structural joins. Broom handle sized sounds about right though, especially if I use (as I'm leaning towards cos they're chunky 'n' cheap ;) ) 100mm fence...

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

Thanks for the advice and good point re: the house floor! ;) The aquarium I'm getting specifies not placing anything under it as it may void the warranty. Bit strange to mention that when the unit itself includes a "safety base frame" so you can use it on non official furniture, but I'll go...

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

Hi. As per subject I am looking to make a cheap (i.e. using building materials) stand for an aquarium. The aquarium has a built in supporting base so the stand just needs to take the weight, not be particularly scientific about load spreading and whatnot. That said, what I have planned should...

Total n00b advice required for "simple" project.

Hey. Thanks for the replies. I like the 2 plywood tongues method for securing the pieces together - much better (and easier) than dowels! I take it I would have each of these about one third in? Were you also suggesting this method for securing the legs to the top? Rather than a mortice and...

Total n00b advice required for "simple" project.

Hi. First post because, aside from a bit of fencing and general outdoor stuff I haven't done any woodwork since school (30+ years ago)! I'm looking at making a pretty simple (famous last words!) stand for my TV and related amps/players/etc. I have rough cut (+5cm) the parts needed in the...
