How do I best build a foundation for a new shed on an existing too large concrete pad?

Yes, I intend to look into this idea in due course, thanks.

How do I best build a foundation for a new shed on an existing too large concrete pad?

Fair comment but the original chicken shed was a commercial enterprise and much larger than my current use. I have had to break up large areas of it and I know from painful experience how hard it was so I have no doubt that it's up to my needs, which are just general storage and don't involve...

How do I best build a foundation for a new shed on an existing too large concrete pad?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. I realise my question could have been better worded. I do indeed intend to float a fresh concrete floor on top of the existing pad, which has been in existence for at least 60 years. It was not expertly laid originally, not being perfectly flat and...

How do I best build a foundation for a new shed on an existing too large concrete pad?

I have a large concrete pad left after demolishing a derelict chicken shed. I'm intending to construct a timber framed shed measuring 6.3 by 4.4 metres on part of this old pad. Given the size of the shed footprint, my intention is not to build a suspended wooden floor but to have a concrete...

Advice on buying an emergency generator

Having lived for many years with power cuts I finally bit the bullet and had a diesel powered generator installed about 18 months ago. I built a small hut/cabinet for it a few yards away from our back door and had an electrician alter the house's distribution board to fit a manual changeover...

    Camera buying advice please

Advice often given is to buy secondhand. I have used MPB.com and can recommend them (usual disclaimers.) Much better value for money since you don't lose a lot of value as soon as you open the box, you get a guarantee and you get 14 days to test and return if you change your mind. If going for...

Help to make french doors - without twist!

I'd certainly agree with pgrbff in saying that allowing your stuff to acclimatise fully, preferable where it will be installed, is very important. As one who's made too many twisted doors I have learnt also how vital it is to have stock that is prepped ABSOLUTELY square and twist free (at least...

    BS350S advice and guidance

Speaking as a relative novice, who bought his first bandsaw a couple of years ago - also a Record 350S - my observations would be:- - yes, a lot of fettling was required - I had to file out some of the holes on the table to clean the casting sufficient to allow me to align the blade with the...

    Which "Stanley" knife? Recommendations please.

Can't find the Irwin FK250 online anywhere now - is this a demo of the power of UK Workshop? !

    Band saw cutting issues

Revealing my novice error might help. I bought a Record BS450 and initially couldn't get it to cut straight. I too found my way to a Tuffsaws blade and things improved dramatically. Tweaking the table setup enabled me to get it to cut (straight cuts) very well with all the guides backed right...

    Richard Maguire?

Yes, a welcome return. As someone who might be deemed 'addicted to woodworking porn', I always enjoyed Richard's very individual style, which was a welcome relief from some of the more 'razz'ma'tazz' overseas offerings. And it was Richard's English workbench series that inspired and motivated me...

    Richard Maguire?

nev - thanks, I hadn't spotted that. AndyT - well done! I never dreamt of scrolling all the way down there. I would just look occasionally and see no later blog post and move on.

    Richard Maguire?

I used to be an avid follower of 'The English Woodworker' but his blog and website haven't shown any activity for several months. I can't search the site for his name because the search facility no longer seems to function. Does anyone know what's happened?

Vice jaws - lining - where to get some suede?

Thanks all, for your responses. As I mentioned in my 2nd Feb post, Leather4Crafts.co.uk came up trumps. I duly received a large-ish offcut of 'seconds' brown/natural suede for a very reasonable cost and the vice is now functioning well!

Vice jaws - lining - where to get some suede?

Thanks everyone, for your responses. I did in fact receive an eventual reply from a place I'd Googled before posting and they pointed me in the direction of https://leather4craft.co.uk/ - I've contacted them and some 'seconds' suede will soon be on its way to me!

Vice jaws - lining - where to get some suede?

I need some suede leather (or very similar) to line the face of my new wooden vice jaw. Am Googling about but I haven't found anyone yet who meets the bill. Does anyone know of any good suppliers of such, preferably who would despatch through the post, etc.?

Wooden vice screw: what to use to prevent it jamming?

Ah, live and learn - thanks BB! Andy - yes sorry, I was being lazy - you did of course say 'a coarse file'. I was just thinking of a fairly small file. Incidentally, when I first encountered the problem, my immediate thought was that I needed something like car engine valve lapping paste to...

Wooden vice screw: what to use to prevent it jamming?

Thanks guys, both look like useful routes to go. The fine file answer had sort of occurred to me but sounds like hard work and is probably a last resort. Droogs - what is "CA glue"?

Wooden vice screw: what to use to prevent it jamming?

As a novice, my first project of course, had to be a bench and, rather ambitiously, I've chosen to attempt to make a wooden face vice. I purchased a proprietary screw and nut a month or so ago and finally got around to start the fitting today. Unfortunately, after some time in my less than well...
