Back Draft Shutters - does a good design exist?

Nonsense. Works perfectly well in fact. The right weight of lead is important of course. I’m not suggesting you glue a hole pack of flashing to it, just enough to weight it slightly. The expelled air is much greater than the force of the outside air lifting it so it’s not difficult.

Back Draft Shutters - does a good design exist?

I have just fitted the airflow Icon fan extractor fan in my bathroom. I fitted it in conjunction with the same back draft shutter in the opening post. Regrettably, the icon fan’s iris is already not closing fully once the timer module has shut off the fan. I’m awaiting response from Airflow but...

Would it be a stupid idea ...

Just a quick update: For anyone else who may have a Tyme lathe, missing its outboard attachments, I found a thread buried somewhere in this forum that showed a simple, home-made set up, made from tubular steel. So I made my own.

    Expansion on t&g boards

Thank you both for your responses. I had figured for about a 2mm gap, but nice to have it confirmed. That’s a good tip regarding pre-finishing the tongues Kevin. I probably wouldn’t have thought of that. Thanks again.

    Expansion on t&g boards

Hope someone can help with this. I’m half way through making some sapele gates for the side of my house. Frames are all put together and now it’s time to board them up with v-notched t&g boards (in sapele). Boards are to run vertically and there will be ten on each gate, approx. 85mm wide. The...

    Cold blue (blu) liquid.

Yes indeed. Not sure how cold patinating fluid works on steel but certainly on brass I’ve found it to be counterproductive to use it in neatform. It certainly seems to react faster but the finish is fragile and much more easily rubbed off than when used diluted and slow.

    Cold blue (blu) liquid.

If we are talking about the same thing then Liberon used to sell a product called tourmaline that I used for ageing new brass furniture handles. IRC they stopped the product as it contains some pretty nasty stuff. There’s a company called Birchwood Casey that sell a similar product that works...

    Really interesting day

Used to go to this regularly until about 8 years ago. I can clearly remember being both slightly amazed and a little despondent when I first saw the Chinese representatives selling fully upholstered leather dining chairs, if bought in the right volume, which wasn’t at all ridiculous, for about...

Bandsaw fence addition - What is this for?

Resawing deeper timber sections. The round bar acts as a guide against which you can steer the workpiece.

How to match/replace spindles on antique chair

6mm is very thin for chair back spindles. However, I have worked on a few Edwardian comb back chairs in mahogany that have had some very thin spindles. Assuming they are round then the easiest way would be to simply use beech dowelling, if beech would suffice? Alternatively, you would need to...

    Mdf radiator screen supplier

When I used to make these I always found https://www.brassgrille.co.uk/ to be very good and thankfully very close by for me.

Auto Switching shop vac without builtin power takeoff

I have a couple of them, hence my earlier post. They’re ok. Not brilliant. I’ve found that with my bandsaw sometimes I need to turn the bandsaw on first then turn off again before they work. With my sander and hoover they work perfectly.

Would it be a stupid idea ...

Thanks for the replies. I thought it might be a little mad to make the parts from wood as it seems to be confirmed.

Would it be a stupid idea ...

.... if I were to make the missing bowl rest assembly for my Tyma Cub lathe out of wood? I'm not so much talking about the tool rest and the tool rest clamp (as I can use the existing ones the sits on the lathe bed) but rather the bar that connects to the lathe chassis and the right angled...

    Third party replacement batteries

Thanks for the replies. I’ve ordered a couple so I will see how it goes and if they’re not up too ouch at least I’ll have a back up to a brand new Brushless Makita when I eventually order one.

    Third party replacement batteries

Just wondering if anyone has tried any of the cheap third party replacement batteries available on eBay for Makita drills? Usually I’m of the opinion that when batteries fail it’s time to ditch the tool and simply buy a new one. And this would certainly be the case with this one, if it was to...

    katsu type router in table???

I mounted my Rutland’s version of the Katsu into a home-built router table. To be fair, I have’nt used it much but it has been fine for what I have used it for. I mounted mine on a hinged top, using quick release toggle clamps, using the fixed base, leaving the plunge base free for hand routing...

    Prediction: moulding planes

Won't be selling any of mine (shown below) anytime soon. Rarely use them but they have, on occasion, got me right out of trouble.
