Heat treating old Ward chisel: Bad idea or not?

Hi All, Thanks for all of your replies. Just thought I'd update you with how I got on. After the common consensus was that the chisel would probably be laminated with only a small bit of hard steel at the tip I didn't hold out much hope but as I had the chisel I thought I'd give it ago anyway. I...

Heat treating old Ward chisel: Bad idea or not?

Is there any sort of crude acid etch or similar that I could do to check if its laminated (which, by the sound of it it, it probably is)?

Heat treating old Ward chisel: Bad idea or not?

So if its laminated I can basically give it very sharp tip and that's about it!

Heat treating old Ward chisel: Bad idea or not?

In all honesty the the shape of the chisel blade is not far off what I want anyway so I'll just need to grind a bevel (without overcooking the edge) and round off the other end. Shaping through forging is above my current technical ability. I was more wondering if I could improve the edge...

Heat treating old Ward chisel: Bad idea or not?

Thanks for the reply. I'd say it'll be more Kiridashi shaped than true Kiridashi!

Heat treating old Ward chisel: Bad idea or not?

Hi all, I need your collective wisdom please. I'm potentially looking to make a Kiridashi type marking up knife for my brother-in-law from an old Ward pig sticker mortise chisel (he is himself a Ward). It bears the tool mark 'WARD WP WARRANTED' but I don't know its age. Any ideas? Firstly will...

Drilling a hole through a screwdriver bit

So I fired up the blow torch with the screw-head end in dipped in snow and heated up the hex end until it glowed red. After that the centre punch left an indent and the cobalt drill bit went through without too much fuss. I don’t know the quality of the bit i was using; it wasn’t a Dewalt one...

Drilling a hole through a screwdriver bit

Thanks Gerry. The plan is to use existing keys as the means to drive the bit so I still need the slot in the top (easy enough to cut in with a thin cutting disc and diamond files). I know magnets are strong but if it can detach when you want it to it can also detach when you don't want it to so...

Drilling a hole through a screwdriver bit

Thanks. I'll give that a go. Even if it doesn't work (which I hope it will) its all good learning.

Is that one of their masonry bits that I could sharpen up? Do they go down to 3mm?

Drilling a hole through a screwdriver bit

"Why" is the question my wife asks of most of my little projects! I'm looking to keep the piece as small as possible and a keyring split ring would be going through the hole (see attached pic). Ideally I want to keep the piece as small as possible. I agree that attaching something else to the...

Drilling a hole through a screwdriver bit

Thanks for the tip. Am I right to say that the purpose of cutting fluid is cooling / heat dissipation or does it aid cutting?
