    Drive Centres

Steb centres excellent , only difficult thing is deciding which diameter to have , would suggest drive centre also best matched with a Steb revolving tail centre . Pricey but well worth it.

    Robert Sorby Pro Edge System

Many thanks, just hoped it could be a two birds with one stone job if I got one . Stick with the Tormek and the Sheppach seems to be the sensible thing.

    Robert Sorby Pro Edge System

If I may digress, how long are the belts for the Pro Edge , can they be used on any other belt sander, thanks .

    Wet Sanding of turning

Thank you for your advice, I have a recently obtained HVLP dust and chip extractor and a separate Microclene air filter. The piece of Laburnum seems to be some of the hardest wood I have ever worked and that includes a chunk of Lignum Vitae I have treasured but now almost used up. All points...

    Wet Sanding of turning

I have seen several references to wet sanding but no advice on how it is carried out . I am currently doing battle with a piece of Laburnum which is very dusty and it sounds as if this would be the right technique so would be grateful for some advice on how it is done. I am more wary of...

    Veritas Carver's Knife

I have had one of the Veritas knives for years , I would say not worth the cost and new blades seem impossible to obtain. However the Swann Morton scalpel blades which fit the no; 3 handle function quite well and as a one time Biology teacher I have a stock of them but readily available on e Bay...

    Spalted Horse Chestnut

I have a load of this sort of stuff which I got for firewood. Turned one piece roughly and very impressed by the finish and grain figuring . Soft bits are a bit picky but easy to turn .

    Sip 01360 Tailstock issues?

I recently acquired an SIP lathe with a burnt out motor , it would have been uneconomic to repair but it did have 2 live centres and two revolving centres all MT1 . not sure of the model of the machine but it all went for scrap , sadly did not occur to me someone may have found those bits...

    Newbie needs chuck

I bought one of the Rutlands chuck packages, no complaints at all about quality and big enough for many jobs with good selection of jaws . My first was a Peter Child one needed 2 tommy bars to operate and that I found very awkward .

    Bowling Ball Mallet

Lignum Vitae lovely wood to turn , I had a lump I made a small mallet out of , see my thread on Record mallet. Have a word with your local bell ringers, they should use straight grain ash for the stays and they do get snapped off in use, just the thing for tool handles.

    Replacing a Thor mallet face

Think I still have a brand new one I was given kicking around, will see if I can find it if you would like it.

    Record Carving Mallet

My standard mallet I have used for many years is home turned from half a croquet mallet head , boxwood with an ash handle , had the advantage of giving me two for the price of one as it were so I have a spare I always wonder what to do with, these weigh about 14 ounces each . I...

more great offers from my local timber merchants

Lost my wife nearly 3.1/2 years ago while I don't have her on my back, though so wish I did , there are other things that get in the way like house cleaning (some), shopping for and getting meals sorted , my retirement in which I had plans to spend much time reducing my stock of wood...

    Today's Rusty Purchases

I have a spokeshave like that in form and colour but it is beech . The cutter is lovely quality but the mouth was worn badly , it was not new when I got it but came from a secondary school though not abused. A careful job with a bit of Box to remake the mouth and there are many years of life...

    Slim Parting Tool

Some time after I started woodturning about 15 year ago I had a need for a narrow tool , I had kicking around, as you do , an old machine hacksaw blade . This a nominal inch wide , I cut it in half with an angle grinder then I ground the teeth off and then to a 90 degree angle point with the...
