How many active turners remain in UKWorkshop ?

I still turn but only occasionally visit UKW. I must confess to using the forum as a source of information rather than actively contributing. This must be the first time I have actually logged in for ages.

need advice on buying a metal lathe

Hi Merv The motor plate will show the voltage rating. If it shows something like 220-240/380-415 then it can be wired for an inverter. If it only shows the higher voltage range then it probably can't and you will need to buy an inverter as wizard says. There is more info on wiring motors to...

    Kity 663 spindle thread etc.

Both BSW and UNC thread forms include a 1" x 8tpi thread. However most modern lathes (and chucks) are UNC see Teknatool information sheet page 4: http://www.teknatool.com/products/Chuck ... Thread.pdf Also according to that list (page 5) and this one from Toolpost, Kity lathes are M33 x 3.5...

    Long time coming

Whilst not paying solicitors seems a fine idea and one I would support, do make sure that whatever financial arrangement you come to is final and legally binding no matter how reasonable you think she is going to be. Trust me I have been there.

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

Yep, that sums it up.

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

OK fair enough. In the example you have given the speed limit is most probably inappropriate and thus irrelevant in the context of travelling safely along that stretch of road. I also agree that in the wider context of driving safely speed limits and speed itself are only two factors amongst...

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

A valid point Roger, but I regret that you are premature in awarding yourself game, set and match for it. Why? Because it relies upon people exercising their common sense and judgement. Even if most do there will always be those who either have none or choose not to exercise it. Hence the speed...

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

Yep, At Heighley Gate we have long slope up from the A1 in one direction with slow lorries ( and sensible van drivers) for the speed merchants to overtake and a long straight from the other direction for them to get up to three figure speeds as they overtake the 40mph sloths that have been...

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

Hmmm. Eight pages of people attempting to justify their own driving styles mostly by means of spouting either pompous tripe or self righteous tosh. Bob's point in the opening post surely is that the deployment of the mobile camera appears to be targeted at income generation rather than safety...

    benefits of BLO

Just a quick update on the friction polish over the top of melamine lacquer and/or CA question. Mark Raby very kindly responded to my e-mail with a phone call. He confirms that, as Jon (chipmunk) thought, applying friction polish over melamine lacquer as in his video is a quick way of achieving...

    1" x 8 - BSF or UNC?

Based on the data provided by Nova for their chucks it would appear that the standard for 1" x 8tpi spindles is UNC. (Assumption based on the fact that they don't supply a BSF version) http://www.teknatool.com/support/how%20to%20id%20your%20lathe%20thread.htm

On the other hand, if you make a complete pineapple of turning an acrylic blank CA is very good at disguising the damage. DAMHIKT

Yep, I use your burnishing cream ( and other brands) on CA after first removing any ridges or other irregularities with 1000 or 1200 grit abrasive. Works well for me. I use the same process with acrylic pen blanks.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply Terry. In the context of the opening poster's original question which is slightly different because it involves CA rather than lacquer: The answer it seems is yes applying friction polish over CA might work but it would not add anything to the original CA...
