From what I have read when the Nova lathes go wrong it is a costly fix.
They do say to clear the dust out by a sensor that's in them but they normally need new circuit boards put in them. (at a cost of about 450 to 500 pounds)
They can suffer with power surging problems so I always unplug my one...
The Nova lathes can suffer with dust, have you tried blowing the dust out of the headstock and the circuit board.
There is also a small fuse in the Nova dvr that you might want to check out as it could be something as simple as changing the fuse or removing the excess dust. I'm not home until...
You could also try putting your lathe on a thick sheet of 8x4 ply as that would spread the weight over a greater area and also cut down on much of the vibration.
It's looking good Derek, a bit of texturing or pyro with some colour on your eye and it will well stand out.
You do know that when you have finished making it your going to have hawks in your garden worshiping it. Les
Sorry only half an answer to your post.
Carbide tools are good for wood removal but can cause a lot of tear out, many people use the carbide tools for removing wood and getting the shape of what they are making and then they swap over to high speed steel tools for finishing off.

NO. don't even think about it, not only would you end up bending your spindle gouge the vibration would be well bad.
Scrapers are thick to cope with the stresses that you put on them your 10mm tool is for fine detail work. I hope that this helps

I really like what you have done with your first one Derek and I like the look of your third one, but I'm not sure about your second one I think that I need to see a few more pictures of it from different angles or see it off the lathe as I don't think its as pleasing to the eye as the other...
