Perfect Router - Does it Exist?

A router is one of the safest powertools I use. Extrapolating your theory about avoiding routers because of gruesome internet images you've found, you would never drive a car, ride a bike, walk across the road or even venture out of your bed, you would just lie there all day and night with a...

    Copyright

Well said that man, a perfect summing-up! I make my living from making my own originally designed furniture (some of which is probably derivative design from subconscious sources, and much of it generic, like many of us except those with an inflated opinion of their work, let's be honest) and...

    Making your own Dominos

Yes, you're right. Oak for me because i'm using them for outdoor as well as indoor works.

    Making your own Dominos

Making copy dominoes is one thing (which I do for the 10mm size as it saves way more per domino) but making unique dominoes is another, and it's the latter that's really advantageous. As you may know the Domino has three widths of oscillation providing narrow, medium and wide mortices. Making...

    Advice on wooden sign please

I make a lot of outdoor oak furniture and house signs, also in air dried oak. In addition to being a cabinetmaker I've had 20 years in the yacht coatings industry so I know a bit about this subject. Putting any sort of coating on oak is an unneccesary waste of time. Oils are fine but will...

Rare Earth Magnets as Door Catches?

I've used the method on kitchens that I've built and have never seen any such staining. As you say, it's really just something to worry about in outdoor furniture, don't worry about it on indoor furniture.

Rare Earth Magnets as Door Catches?

I often use two 10mm magnets together (use a dowel marker to get them aligned perfectly) with a clear urethane buffer stuck onto one of them to damp the closing and avoid too violent a CLICK!! I also use the screw on one side method as it's a quick and easy adjustment feature.

    Breathing dust

Where do you guys get your disposable FFP3 masks from? I currently use FFP2 but may upgrade although they're super-pricey. I work with hardwoods every day (oak, ash and elm, not the most notorious ie tropical hardwoods). Incidentally I did an office job for many years and had bad asthma...

    copies

This is an interesting thread! I think the answer is "it depends". I make my living from furniture making, but I'm happy to occasionally post images of my work on here in the full knowledge that some of you may tell me it's rubbish while some may be influenced by it or even inspired to make a...

    Metal Runners

I often give my customers the choice. A: Concealed runners that will give a super-smooth action, will never need maintenance, will never stick and which will allow access to the whole drawer. B: Integrated wooden runners that will look "traditional" but have all of the disadvantages which are...

    Cheerio

I would agree with that. Not something I tend to do if I want to make an income from a piece!

    Cheerio

I totally agree, and will continue to occasionally post pics of my works on this basis i.e. not get offended if people say what they really think. My best, most honest critic is my wife. If she hates one of my pieces she tells me! The main thing is that each customer likes the pieces I'm...

    Cheerio

I don't care what "purists" say - full extension runners cannot be beaten for functionality and maintenance-free reliability. I accept however the aesthetic argument which is why I use the concealed type. The benefits for the customer are a lower product price and drawers that will work...

    Ash / walnut coffee table

If you can make something like that from scratch in a week of evenings you should pack in the day job and do cabinet making full time. I'm a pro maker and without a doubt would find it impossible to do it in that time. Whatever time it took, it's a nice distinctive piece, well done!

First project - Ashes casket for my Dad

Well done mate, he'd be well proud of you for sure. You've obviously put a lot of love and hard work into that piece - a very good combination I must say! My old man was a cabinet maker and died in 1995, far too young, due to previous working with asbestos. From the day he died he has...
