    Black streak in pippy oak

Tester piece looks really good. The black streaks remaining are epoxy filled cracks. Any thoughts/concerns on finishing over the top of this with osmo oil? My plan now is to apply some borax to neutralise the acid as I read this was a good idea, then lightly sand and apply the finish.

    Black streak in pippy oak

I personally felled this tree in Hastings and had to remove an arrow head from the wood, it seemed to have some eyeball remnants on the end of it....

    Black streak in pippy oak

Thanks for quick replies. I'll get hold of some oxalic acid and give that a try I think as I only need to change the appearance of the top surface of the wood. The last 100mm of the piece of oak is to be trimmed off so i can do a tester on that and see what happens. Failing that its time to...

    Black streak in pippy oak

I've got a black streak, almost like a dye has penetrated the oak throughout the board. Does anyone know what this is? and or how i could cover it up.. See picture below. My current solution is to either trim it off length or width ways (customer wants it removed), personally I'd leave it but...

    Live Edge River Table

Thanks for the info custard. I have an explanation from the supplier but it's not a very good one and he has offered a refund or a new (dry) board, so I'm going to go down and see what I can find. Bit of a long shot but hopefully a piece which roughly fits the cut glass :? it's got some fairly...

    Live Edge River Table

I was sold what was meant to be live edge kiln dried oak and everything apart from the kiln dried bit was true (having now measured it...24% moisture content). So my current situation is I have a nice flowing piece of toughened glass, two warped bits of drying oak (if I plane them flat they...

    another french polish question...

FYI I was padding it on, I tired with cotton wool in the core but I didn't like that so ended up using scrunched up linen as the core, surrounded by more linen if that makes sense.

    another french polish question...

thanks for all the info. From what I read its best to put it on in very small diluted layers especially if your technique is off, so I diluted (with denatured alcohol) the shellac down to an unknown mix but one which I felt comfortable putting on and gave me the results I was looking for. It's...

    another french polish question...

I bought some colron french polish to finish a chessboard I've been working on (my first project) and am having lots of trouble with getting the high gloss finish I want! Ive probably sanded it back significantly about 3 or 4 times but I guess my persistence will eventually pay off. My...
