    The shiny plane of happiness

A generous gift and your sympathetic tidy up is exactly right. It still looks its age, but a bit happier about it! Best wishes Brian

    Domestic Vacuum Cleaners

We had a VAX upright for about five years. It was OK, but a bit on the heavy side and better in straight lines than manoeuvring into corners, around furniture etc. When it gave up the ghost about six months ago, we bought one of the Shark Lift-Away ones. I've been very impressed with it, the...

    Bloody Parcelfarce strikes again

 What, even if you're sitting there in your pyjamas?! Rockford

    The Repair Shop

I came across it a couple of weeks ago and am thoroughly enjoying it. I find it a great buffer between work and the rest of my evening - it's quite calming! The variety of items is quite good and the real interest and enthusiasm of the various experts is quite refreshing, not to mention their...

Your first car booty of the season

The 'after' results are impressive! What did you use to clean up the metal on the ratchet screwdriver? I've got a couple of tools kicking about in the same before condition that would benefit from being smartened up. Thanks Rockford

    Thanks for the inspiration

That's a very nice table. The colour of the paint really sets it off and the top looks great. Sounds you enjoyed making it too! Best wishes Rockford

    Magi finally finished

They are great and very well finished. Have you plans to make the full nativity, or have you done the rest already? I started one based on Shawn Cipa's handcarved designs and six years later have made about five figures. Every year I think I'll get more finished by 'this' Christmas...... :D...

    Turned my first bowl today!

That's very nice and an impressive first attempt! It looks quite different in each of the photos, which one do you think looks most like its 'true' shape? I don't have space for a lathe but would love to have a go at proper turning - my brother in law keeps teasing that there is one buried at...

Out of the Wood Exhibition - my first exhibition

Congratulations on the exhibition - it all looks fantastic and must give you a real sense of achievement. The single flying puffin and the Hielan' Coo are my favourites! Best wishes Rockford

    Tempest in chestnut burr

I really like that - especially the contrast between the lighter wood and the darker fittings. Most of the ones I've seen are the other way round. It would be nice to see the nutcrackers too. Best wishes Brian

    Books....proof positive of dumbing down!

Quite! The 'recipe' does call for radium, or mesothorium both to be mixed with phosphorescent sulphide of zinc. If you can't get those apparently strontium thiosulphate and paraffin wax will suffice.... However, in these long drawn out October nights, the book does offer some helpful...

    Books....proof positive of dumbing down!

Mind you, I did manage to tip a tin of walnut woodstain over my wool suit trousers a fortnight ago  . I had been 'refurbing' my workbench at the weekend and when I was passing the shed on my return home from work on the Monday evening, I thought 'I'll just give it a quick last coat...

    Handmade in Japan

I watched the programme too and found it fascinating, compelling and oddly relaxing. The distinctions between the skills involved was what struck me - especially when one of the brothers said that two people forging the swords would cause disagreements so he decided to become a sharpener...

    Day Tripper garden chair WIP

That's quite ingenious Phil. I wasn't sure how it was going to go together until the end. You said the finish would be outdoor paint. It would be nice to see one once you have painted it. Will you paint them before or after assembly? I've just got round to painting an adirondack chair I...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Very nice. I've always fancied having a go at one of these. Will you use it for its original purpose or as a planter? Best wishes Rockford
