    Batteries, heat and wood

Thanks! I haven't decided on a price as I need to get the design fully locked down. For the battery lamp its the batteries that ramp the price up so it's looking around £50-80 with the possibility of providing a 2nd battery module so you can always have one charging.

    Batteries, heat and wood

Thanks again everyone! Regarding my comment about heat shrink, I realised after I posted it that actually it does the opposite of dissipating it! Duh. And yeh all of my stuff is from certified sources and companies so I can request the documents if they arent already there. Yeh I'm going to...

    Batteries, heat and wood

Thanks again for all your advice. I did more research on it last night so I feel like I've got the jist of the regs and requirements now.

    Batteries, heat and wood

Thanks again. I spent my lunch break today looking up the CE side of things. It seems that it is considered safe and professional to have a CE marking and all the conformity but it isn't necessarily a legal requirement. I do fully test my mains lamps within my abilities before I send them. So...

    Batteries, heat and wood

Yeh I'm with you on the PWM side of things. I was surprised with this bulb that using resistors that effectively halved the light output and it still hasnt flickered at all! The varistor seems like a no-go because from what ive read up a varistor works on creating heat to use up the excess...

    Batteries, heat and wood

thanks for all the replies and info! It appears I need to look more at the electrics than the wood side of all of this! See the picture of one of my other lamps, this is the style that I'm going for. So I have a 12v screw bulb at 4w with a filament, which is the best I can find currently with a...

    Batteries, heat and wood

Thanks for the reply. It is a 12v 5w LED lamp and the battery is 8xAA in series so just under 12v. I have been looking at resistors to see if I can increase the load to make the lamp dimmer. I burnt out a resister because I believe the resistor I had isn't rated for the correct wattage, which...

    Batteries, heat and wood

Hi All, Apologies if this topic has come up before (if so please point me in the right direction) So I have been building lamps from hardwoods and this has been using mains power and feeding the cable through a hole inside etc. I want to build a battery operated one, and I'm making some...

    Leaking air compressor couplings

Before covid put me out of work we used CO2 Dewar's all the time for low smoke and haze machines. PTFE was always the go-to option. I think it's supposed to be 'one wrap' but I sometimes found you had to do at least 2 times round the thread to get a good seal. Some compressors etc do leak as...

    Thin sheet material

Thanks for all the replies! Dave P - Would love a bandsaw! Think it comes under the 'too costly' parameter currently. PCB1962 - I've looked at their site a few times, might have to consider that hobby pack, looks a very reasonable price! Rorton - Cheers for all that advice and the pics. I do...

    Thin sheet material

thanks for the advice. I should probably get myself a smoothing plane! Currently my block plane does the job on most of my projects

    Thin sheet material

Hi everyone! I've been on here a month or so and love what you guys discuss, dont always have much to add, but soon I hope to be able to contribute more when I know more myself! Another question for the hive mind: I sometimes try to build small-ish stuff and I dont own a thicknesser, cant...

    Sand between coats of Osmo?

I've never sanded between coats on osmo polyx or the extra thin coat. I have pretty good results from it. I usually sand up to 120 or 180g before applying. Though, I am not as experienced as most of the people on here!

    What no knobs

I'm 'young' enough that smart phones and homes should be my thing but I cant stand it. It's a novelty going to someone elses house and chatting to alexa, but not for my home thanks. Maybe the fact that a lot of people here love using hand tools and the hands on approach, it makes sense a lot of...
