    Sanding Discs

Thank you for taking the time to respond. The six inch sander is a Draper Belt and Disc Sander (purchased second-hand). The table is mounted on a rod so the distance from the disc can be adjusted (as can the tilt). The twelve inch is a “home made” attachment for my lathe. I attached a face...

    Sanding Discs

I have two disc sanders - one has 6 inch discs and the other 12 inch discs (or perhaps I should write 150 mm and 305 mm - I forget that young people are brought up with metric measurements) I'm thinking of converting one or both to velcro attached sanding discs and wondered about the...

    Identify thread

It's the body of a tap - the hot water tap for my bath. It would have been fitted around 1960. There's a bad leak and water hammer and I need to shut it off. The in-line valve turns off the hot water supply to my kitchen Local plumbers merchant says it's not BSP! Naturally, this happened...

Sorting taps & dies - or - "Oh how I hate photo printing"?

I inherited a lot of Taps and Dies from my late father; various sizes up to 1 inch BSW in a variety of thread forms, BSW, BSF, BA. More recently a chum had to give up his shed workshop because his wife wanted them to move into a flat and I now have increased the range with Metric as well as...

    Unseizing cast iron wheels

I have used Shield Technology's RESTORE to remove rust from a number of different old tools. For small items I put them in an ultrasonic bath and let that run for a few minutes then left them for a week. After washing off the Restore and a stiff brushing, they were usable again. MC

Counterbores for UNF 10-32 Socket Cap Screw

Thank you for taking the time to respond. That would be a good suggestion ................ if I had any slot drills! I was thinking of drilling on my lathe; I would hope that would give more accuracy Have you found a supplier of SHORT Counterbores for 10-32 UNF? With best wishes and...

Counterbores for UNF 10-32 Socket Cap Screw

Can anybody suggest, please, where I might obtain a counterbore for a 10-32tpi UNF Socket Cap Screw. (it's 5.0 mm pilot and 8.0 mm or 8.5 mm clearance for the cap) I need to use one in a project where I have to open several holes this size. All my normal sources only sell Metric...

    Cleaning Up Record Vice ?

I wrote to Irwin Record ([email protected]) and they kindly sent me a pdf of the original Repair and Maintenance Instructions. If you send me your email address off list, I'll sent it to you. I dismantled a Record No. 55 Vice (which was VERY rusty), removed rust, painted it...

    Taps and dies

I inherited a lot of Taps and Dies in various thread standards (BSW, BSF, BA , lots unidentifiable(!) and a few metric) but when I've needed new ones have bought from both Tap & Die company in north London and Tracy Tools in Devon. Tap&Die will sell empty wooden boxes with pre-cut hollows for...

Where to buy Robert Sorby turning tools online good value

Some web sites include V. A. T. and others don't in the listed prices - so read the small print carefully! How are you going to ensure that well meaning relations don't all buy you the same chisel? MC

Tool restoration; how far should we go?

I'd like to suggest that anybody who needs to restore an old cutting tool like this tries a Pro-Edge. I'm sure that any retailer offering these would be pleased to demonstrate its effectiveness by sharpening your blade. MCB

Tool restoration; how far should we go?

My experience with Restore is that it's good value for money and the firm that make it has very helpful courteous people who respond quickly to After sales queries. Since I'm diabetic, I would NOT want to have Molasses in my home! MCB
