    M42 blunting fast

Thanks Brian and Greg - I've sent an email to my supplier with the caveat of my situation to see what they say! Will update here afterwards.

    Squashed wood supplier

Over the last few years I've read the odd article here and there about the mechanical benefits of hot pressing wood (not for bending purposes, but under extreme pressure to compress the wood). Inevitably the articles are about how the latest method might be better than the last etc. however, I...

    extractor for bandsaw

Hi Pete, How effective are those particle counters? I seem to recall reading a paper stating they werent very accurate for wood dust - but I may be confusing myself with particle counters for home air quality. Chris - one thing that is often not mentioned is that aside from the rating of...

    M42 blunting fast

The cutting edge was sharpened to 240 grit - I'm off to sharpen it to 1000 and log the difference, the edge is a relatively steep angle (will need to check the precise angle). The edge dosnt appear chipped, but I lack the magnification to look at it any closer - is a cheap usb microscope a...

    M42 blunting fast

Hi again all, So. Until now, I've been turning with a half-size 1/2" set of Marple carbon steel tools that came with my second hand lathe. They've been absolutely grand for learning on and practicing my sharpening. I've recently bought my first full size tool , a 1/2" Crown M42 bowl gouge. I've...

File as a skew - safety concern

Fair enough Robbo, As it stands I've returned the tool, it seems the seller wasnt aware. As for the latter, I was in a similiar mindset when starting this thread, but have read a few examples on line of individuals who have had a file made skew snap on them while turning - while their use...

File as a skew - safety concern

Hi Dalboy, Thats just it. If I knew the metal composition and heat treatment method, I'd feel safer, but I dont think the risk is worth it.

    What am I doing wrong

You're completely right! I'm still a complete beginner, so I'm exploring different methods for really thing turnings - I'll try your suggestion next. I'm aiming for 'purist status' but at this stage, I think I'd like more complete turnings to show people! :|

    What am I doing wrong

An underlying difference can also be the thickness of the wood. On the outside you have the core supporting your cuts, so there is less vibration and you can be more aggressive with your tool. On the inside, any extra pressure can cause some distortion when your wall gets thin! I was down to 3mm...

File as a skew - safety concern

Hi all, Just received an ebay purchase, and the 'skew turning chisel' has clearly been made from an old flat turnip file. Without access to the manufacturing methods I'm not too happy about this - my concern is that it will be too brittle and I risk having it snap off and cause grievous bodily...

    Cherry Wood

I'm with you on the fear of the chainsaw! The most commonly recommended way is a bandsaw if you have the space? I've also found a froe to be much less work than an aze.

'A Hello' and 'The quest for depth - bigger bowl gouge?'

Chas - indeed, I had read many such posts, I was just unsure if that was the right direction to head in given my dilemma. I have now ordered some steel bar and a cutter - huzzah! I may have gone a bit big on the cutter, we shall see.. Also, your tool handle is very interesting, are there any...

'A Hello' and 'The quest for depth - bigger bowl gouge?'

Thanks for the link Chas, Seems like it'll be cheaper to put together a carbide tipped scraper than buy an appropriate length/thickness of HSS. Either that or I could just use a length of tool steel, cheap but soft without the heat treatment. Have you any experience with different options?

'A Hello' and 'The quest for depth - bigger bowl gouge?'

Thanks Mike, So does that mean I just need to get used to overhanging the tool a lot? Because the section protruding from the handle on my gouge is only 10cm long it feels like an extreme overhang when I'm at the end of it!
