    Remembering Grandad

Your point being? Today is the day to remember our service men and women killed and injured during conflicts around the world. Having just returned from a service where we as a family, paid tribute to our nephew killed in Afganistan and his cousin who lost both legs and part of his hand in the...

birdsmouth cut advice... potential cock up

Topchippyles, excellent work! That eyebrow dormer is very impressive. Thanks for showing it; I wouldn't have a clue how to start it without some VERY detailed drawings and someone with your experience passing on their knowledge. Thanks Kieran

birdsmouth cut advice... potential cock up

Hi Mike, If you are using the wind ties, you won't need the rafter clips. I presume you are going to have a fascia board across the rafters; if you add a longitudinal section behind the fascia it will prevent the rafter from moving. Hopefully you have enough posts to see my pic this time. Kieran

birdsmouth cut advice... potential cock up

Afternoon Mike. Not sure which way you have cut the birdsmouth; is it A or B? If it is A, you don't really have a problem, you can attach a firring piece to the top of each rafter to produce your fall. If it is B, simply use truss clips https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p76165?r=emarsys[/url] to...

Window to small for opening any idea's

Morning Jacob, I'm sorry, but I can't agree with you there, if all of the windows had been similarly undersize, I’d agree with your solution; however, the lined window would be so different to the others it would stick out like a sore thumb. Sawdust, you could always plant on a section...

Window to small for opening any idea's

Evening Sawdust. I'd be tempted to tell the customer he needs a new window to be made for the opening. Anything you do to the small window will look like a bodged attempt to make it fit, the reveals will look distinctly different both internally and externally and the cill detail will be subpar...

    Ashley Iles ferrule

Afternoon Coley Thanks for documenting the process so well. I remember (way back in the mists of time :D ) metalwork at School, heating a tang in the forge to plunge into a wooden handle to ensure a tight fit, so was dreading trying to remove the handle without damage. You are right about the...

    Ashley Iles ferrule

Afternoon Custard, I’d sharpened three of the seven chisels last thing on the weekend, and must not have wiped them down properly; they were stored in a leather tool roll, in a cupboard with another set of cheap Lidl/Aldi chisels that I use for rough work (in an identical roll), my planes...

    Ashley Iles ferrule

Thank you all so much for your replies and ideas. Think I'll call Ashley Iles in the morning to see how much they will charge to replace the ferrule, as I'm a bit ham fisted at the moment and can see me ruining the handle. :D I damaged the flexor tendon (zone 3) in the left hand thumb laying...

Hi Nick, I have the SIP version of the machine. You say the machine is new to you, did you check the tables are coplaner and the infeed isn't set to its highest point. I sometimes have the same problem when planing, and it almost always the outfeed table handles not tightening properly when...
