    Magnetic Dovetail Guide

I tried the Lee Valley guide which works quite well but then got the Rob Cosman DVD and a Veritus DT saw. What I like about the Cosman method is the speed but I still cant get his accuracy. How long or how many practice joints does it take to get a result approaching Cosman's?

    Chainsaw mill??

I rigged up a chainsaw mill to cut some planks of oak. I laid an aluminium ladder next to the tree trunk and made a height adjustable sled to run up and down the ladder, attached chainsaw to ladder and then cut. It worked fine but don't suppose the health and safety police would approve. It...

    Dovetail Saw- new or vintage?

Having recently taught myself to sharpen a dovetail saw (using various links from these forums) my questions are, if I tune up an old vintage dovetail saw will it ever be as good as a Wenzloff, Lie Nielsen Adria etc. Is there any inherent deficiency in the metal of vintage saws compared to...

When is a Tormek not a Tormek?

The scheppach is a good price and I am very tempted but from what I have read it seems all tormek jigs are compatible except the planer blade jig and scheppach don't do their own. Does anyone know different?

    Mail order timber?

Brad If you can manage a trip to Southampton then R.A. Bampton ltd at Four Maries Yard, 31, Vespasian Rd, Southampton, Hampshire SO18 1AY have a good selection of hardwood. What I like is that you can walk around the timber shed and choose the piece you want. Regards Andrew

    Sanding Solution

I recently bought a secondhand jet drum sander and I am very pleased with it. It takes less than a minute to change sandpaper, each end is retained by a spring loaded lever you just push the lever and insert the end of the paper. Andrew

    Vacuum Veneer Press

A slightly cheaper alternative to buying from Axminster is provided on the US ebay site here http://cgi.ebay.com/4-x-8-Electric-Vacu ... dZViewItem.

    Chichester

Leeside is definitely worth a visit, lots of second hand handtools. There is quite a good hardware store in East Street selling hand tools. Also worth considering is West Dean college, its shop sells specialist tools for their woodworking students, see their web site for details of the location.

    Making a drum sander

Is there any reason why I shouldn't adapt my 12 inch planer/thicknesser into a drum sander by removing the knives and attaching sandpaper to the cutter block Has anyone tried this? On the same theme could you attach sandpaper to a spindle moulder cutter block?
