Abranet: does it produce a less 'polished' sanded finish..?

Haven't checked back for a while so thanks for the replies folks - that makes sense now..! :-)

Abranet: does it produce a less 'polished' sanded finish..?

To explain that question: For many years I used only an old Bosch PSS 230 orbital sander on various small projects such as shelves. I gave that sander hours and hours of use over the years, and developed a way of working with it that would see me going back and forth many times over a surface...

    Precise Jigsaw: Festool PS420 EBQ-Plus or Bosch GST160CE ?

Thanks Phil, I'm pegging most of the joints, but I'll bear that in mind Ian

    Precise Jigsaw: Festool PS420 EBQ-Plus or Bosch GST160CE ?

Been lifting them at various times over the last two or three years... Yes, they're heavy... I gave up when it came to the posts for the deck I'm making... three 8" x 8" green oak posts, each 3m long... must weigh about 120-130kg each. I let my two lads move them for me :-) I'm making the...

    Precise Jigsaw: Festool PS420 EBQ-Plus or Bosch GST160CE ?

Thanks Phil, I guess 'rough' would include ripping 4" think oak 'sleepers'..? Now that I have the bandsaw - and a couple of Axminster's heavy duty roller stands - I imagine I could usefully cut down the 8" x 4" and 9" x 5" sleepers that are available locally. I think they import them from...

    Precise Jigsaw: Festool PS420 EBQ-Plus or Bosch GST160CE ?

Thanks Phil... I know very little about bandsaws. It's just got the one blade that came with the machine (which is still in its box in the back of the car!) I guess I want a fairly narrow blade for curves..? Although the curve is fairly gentle, probably about 400mm radius, and the cut is in 2" oak.

    Precise Jigsaw: Festool PS420 EBQ-Plus or Bosch GST160CE ?

Thanks, folks, for all the thoughtful replies and good advice (which I'll come back to for future reference)... When I considered all the feedback and reviews, none of the options seemed particularly attractive. The Mafell was consistently recommended, not just here, but by one of the dealers I...

    Precise Jigsaw: Festool PS420 EBQ-Plus or Bosch GST160CE ?

Thanks Alex, but the Mafell really is above my price range for what is likely to be an infrequently used tool. I'm leaning toward the Bosch, as the Festool bevel plate does have to be bought separately, which pushes the price up another £100 Also now considering the Metabo STE 140 Plus...

    Precise Jigsaw: Festool PS420 EBQ-Plus or Bosch GST160CE ?

I need to cut some curved corner braces (quadrants) from 6" x 2" oak, each about 500mm long. I don't have a band saw, which I guess might be the best tool for this job, but I'm thinking a really good jigsaw might do it. The Bosch is £230 at Axminster: 800W motor, barrel grip, looks good...

Don't try this at home..! (warning - it's a bit gruesome)

Thanks Jim: good points... Although it's probably too soon to tell, it feels like the nerves on the front, tip and sides of the finger are OK. Not been given any exercises and I'll be very grateful if that is the case ~ I cut into the tip of my left middle finger with a circular saw (!) two...

    SIP Dust Extractor 01954

Hi Terry, Yes, I got the SiP - glad the tip about CostCo was useful. I haven't followed up re the filter canister as I haven't sorted the workshop ducting out and have only used it with the Planer/Thicknesser so far - it seems to work well for that as it comes, without spreading dust around...

Don't try this at home..! (warning - it's a bit gruesome)

Actually, my son, a retained fireman, told me a while back that they pretty much always use hydraulic cutting gear - like this: http://www.fireproductsearch.com/products/rescue-tools/cutters/ --------------------------------------------------------------- I e-mailed Medical Photography last...

Don't try this at home..! (warning - it's a bit gruesome)

Thanks Robin, Pete I think this machine is particularly powerful... I had the power to it cut out from the mains once. When I restored the power I forgot that I'd left the switch on the machine held on... it flew off the kitchen worktop I'd been sanding, jammed under a cupboard, and cut a...

Don't try this at home..! (warning - it's a bit gruesome)

Here's a trick to avoid: Release power switch on belt sander (a powerful Makita 4"), flip the sander onto its side while the belt's still moving, but slowing down, and change the belt... Speeds things up a tad and works fine maybe a dozen times, THEN Slight pressure of finger on the belt...

UJK Technology Professional with phenolic top. I looked long and hard before deciding on this one and had to wait a while for it to come back into stock with Axminster (I went for a phenolic top at the time because I didn't want to risk cast iron in my damp workshop, though I've just bought a...
