Record Power Coronet Herald Heavy Duty Cast Iron Electronic

Seen one in the flesh last week. I was going in to my local shop to order a DML320 and they have a herald sitting there @ £899. Lovely looking thing, but i couldn't justify the price increase over the DML320 which seems to be a cracking lathe in its own right.

    Upgrade time!

Thanks for the input, guys, much appreciated. You know what, Terry, your 100% right. The DML320 looks absolutely perfect. I've never had a problem with Record at all and this incarnation meets all my needs perfectly, with an option of a bed extension if needs be. Solid bed, proper vairable...

    Upgrade time!

Afternoon guys, So, thanks to this forum i've been a happy turner for about the last 2 years! I originally landed a Record CL1 that had seen very little use and have been happily using it ever since, but inevitably, the time has come to upgrade! Now that i know a bit more, i'd like...

    Long boring of end grain.

Thats a hell of a list and tbh i cant really think of many more that aren't on it. i turned Cocobolo a while back and it was crazy irritating... never again. Well, small pieces only.

    I finally bit the bullet!

I bit the bullet a year ago and haven't looked back since... great hobby and once set up there's not really anymore big expense apart from the odd tool here and there. Get reading the basics for safetys sake and get spinning, it's the best way to learn.

    Long boring of end grain.

The simple fruits of my labour... haven't been turning long. Both stems are Birch, one dyed black. The bowls are an unidentified species that is VERY nice imo. Really enjoyed making these so more in the pipeline (pun intended) :D

    Long boring of end grain.

Thanks for all your replies guys. Sorry for the late reply, i'm only getting back to my computer now after a busy evening. I've tried spinning the work and boring fron the tailstock with no success. I have also tried hand drilling with the cordless and the work in a vice, with SOME success...

    Long boring of end grain.

Morning chaps, Currently making a few straight stemmed tobacco pipes as a request from a friend but having trouble getting a straight hole bored down the middle. I'm using 20mm x 20mm Walnut about 200mm long. Start boring a 2mm hole, but end up breaking through the side after 4 or 5 inches. I...

    FINALLY got me a lathe!!

Thanks for the reply Mike... glad to know i've got the heavier machine. Going to give it a strip down, clean and rebuild just to make sure everything's ok as it was lying for a few years and then i'll get stuck right in!

    FINALLY got me a lathe!!

Hi guys, Just landed my first lathe after quite a bit of research. Not the lathe i intended buying but a very little used Record CL1-S4, complete with stand came up for sale with a set of 6 Record chisels, Record 6" bench grinder and a Record RP4000 Chuck, all for the princely sum of £230. FAR...

    Superduper newbie budget challenge!

Thanks for all the advice guys it's very much appreciated. Im gonna get myself the 8" Record Power grinder with white stone and a "ebay special" jig, just to keep the edges true-ish. I'll still keep an eye on the second hand market for a lathe between now and the end of July (when Axminster's...

    Superduper newbie budget challenge!

All good points. I'm definately no stranger to woodworking and power/hand tools and the safety aspects that go along with them. I dont think i'd be too bothered with the ear protection unless i feel like i need it at the time but a dust mask and full face mask is a must imo. I've actually had...
