    Rip cutting with a chainsaw

I've done it, it makes a mess. Don't ask too much of the saw. If you have a spare chain, you file it rip. There are YouTube vids on it.

    Vintage Record Planes

I have a #06, from the dating time line, I would say 1952. A quality plane, rosewood and all, maybe the best Bailey style plane I've bought. The American made Stanleys from that time used green castings that warped. For a later #05 1/2 I had to arrange a date with a milling machine.

    Block plane

If you check the blade widths of block planes, 1 5/8" , 1 3/8" or 1 1/4", you can judge which is , groan, the handiest for you.

    quality planes

I have two #6 planes from about 1952ish, a rosewood and blue Record and a beech and green Anchor. The Record is the better made plane.

    Brace Question.

That's the chuck. With just Germany on it, that would put between the wars. Post war would likely have had either West Germany or the zone. I think I saw Primus as the maker. Yours would be 157A Yes ,we did.

    Brace Question.

I've found the odd one that has a chuck with flats in my rust hunts , but none have had any markings. I checked them but didn't buy any, how many plain 10" hand braces can you store in your workshop ? I enjoy the history of tools as well as their use. So thank you for giving a manufacturer for...

    Record 9 1/2 - angles and edge retention ?

Thanks for the idea, Derek. I'll have to try that on of one of my #9 1/2s. They are fairly common here, <$20 Canadian. ( divide 20 by 1.60) The low angle #60 1/2 are not as common, I've only found one, a war time one.

Your top 10 hand tools for a beginner

I don't know the cost of Japanese waterstones in England , but in Canada the 1000/4000grit combination can be relatively inexpensive. I found I could get a sharper edge with them than oil stones.

Any Way do sharpen a SurForm?

Being American, I would think I would think surf as in waves. I tried using one to fair plywood mold stations for a cedar strip canoe build. I might have gotten 6 inches before it was dull.
