    Archer miter plane

The smoothing plane is by Spiers and I think the iron is original. I believe it is about mid 1800's also. It has pinned sides, not screwed so it is not the earliest. However, the more styled knob is an earlier feature. The marking gauge is a Winslow's adjustable face with a PAT Oct 23 '00. It...

    Archer miter plane

Thanks. That is a start. Any indication as to rarity? The plane needs a bit of restoration work. The rear infill is loose and the back end has been hit with a hammer too many times. Other than that it is pretty nice.

I have a small miter plane that is marked Archer. Anyone have any references related to this tool maker?

how the heck do i regrind this

Tom, I received your email but thought I would respond here. Some time ago I dropped my marking knife and as it headed for the concrete floor I instinctively (or desperately) reached my foot out to break the fall and soften the blow. Of course it was my luck it was going point down and it went...

    Move over Dave Jeske...

Ed, No need to move over, there is plenty of room! Nice work. There is a great deal of satisfaction from using a tool you made with your own hands.

    Blue Spruce Chisels and Mallets

Well, I've been using the prototype for over a year! I hope to have it in production in a month or so, but that is what I said about 6 months ago.

    Blue Spruce Chisels and Mallets

Sorry, I'm a bit late to the discussion on chisels but I've been busy making.... chisels (and marking knives)! I just wanted to clarify a few things about using a mallet on Blue Spruce Toolworks' chisels. The Dovetail chisels and Paring chisels are essentially the same chisels except for...

    One for all and all...Dun

Very nice work, however, they do look suspiciously similar to some Blue Spruce Toolworks' marking knives that I make! I was hoping to be at Mike Hancock's show but not this year. Maybe next.

    Gloat - New Tool

Here in the states we use what are called "compression fittings" that are brass fittings to secure copper tubing. The nuts come in various sizes and configurations but are usually hex shaped and threaded on the inside. The round-over on one end to match the diameter of the copper tube. These...

    Tyzack dates

Wiley, The book shows various marks including a couple like you describe with the word Tyzack and then Railway Arch and then 345 Old Street. They do not directly correlate the marks to dates but seem to put them in order. I would guess yours is from right around the turn of the century. Maybe...

    Tyzack dates

Wiley, Goodman lists several dates for 345 Old Street beginning around 1892. This would be Samuel Tyzack. Samual Tyzack and son were there until about 1913. Later, Samual & Son, Ltd was there from about 1926 to 1976. dave
