I've finally completed the cold roof, vented at either end and insect meshed as advised. I now have the walls to do, are these vented top and bottom too? Seems extreme?! Or can you just leave an airgap without vents for walls?

I can confirm this method is highly, highly effective. My house is rammed to the gunnels with tools I have purchased for one off jobs and will likely never use again. My brain is the same, creaking at the joints with skills acquired that will never be required again. I do wonder if it might have...

Thanks Fitz, I'm being more and more tempted toward the sort of cold roof you describe. The rafters are 93mm deep and the wall studs are 87mm deep (no idea why they're different, whatever). If I opt for 50mm PIR all round, that would give a vent space of 43mm on the roof and 37mm on the walls...

Sorry for taking forever with follow up questions ... this is a long term project! Are you referring her to what I've seen elswhere as a "hybrid" roof? This looks much simpler than creating a vent space between the roof ply and the insulation.

When fitting Tee Hinges, do you put the hinges on the door or the frame first, and are there any rules regarding whre the hinge-pin center of rotation goes (can't think of another way to put that!). And yes, I'd be surprised if there is another project running as ridiculously slowly as this...

This is possible. They've told me to fit it with just bolts inside initially. Once it's in I can retrofit something like this. Might actually be the best way as I'm less likely to screw something up due to my inexperience if I can see the whole thing in situ first. I'm sure when you've done this...

Just bolts. I'd like to fit a proper lock if possible but they said just bolts was ok if there wasn't a better solution. It's a back door so not like it's the main entrance - they never 'exit' (and lock) the door to go our and about for example, just to go into the garden.
