I'm no expert but that looks like a fault in manufacture looks like a fairly clean break so could be a stress line in the metal. I've seen similar on knives due to poor heat treatment.

First post and maybe a daft question but can anyone explain how to sharpen a spokeshave and set one up correctly? I have been buying secondhand tools and picked a decent spokeshave up but it's blunt and not set correctly.
