    Hand saw sharpening files

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated. I bought 15 saws for an old guy who seemed to collect them... for £20. Hopefully they’ll arrive tomorrow. His daughter said the looked straight and no teeth missing. 🤩

    Hand saw sharpening files

Thanks. I don’t actually have the saws yet, that’s why I was thinking about getting a cheap set so I could get cracking straight away. I remember watching a video on YouTube about router bits and the guy recommended buying a cheap set, then replacing the ones you use often with good ones -...

    Hand saw sharpening files

Hi This thread follows one I created last year about whether it’s worth getting involved in resharpening saws or just buying through away HP saws. Thanks to all who responded. I’ve decided that resharpenable is the way I’d like to go and managed to get my hands on a load of old saws to...

Resharpenable saws or throw away saws?

Thanks. Interesting comments. I’m used to sharpening my chain saws and lathe tools so it seems fairly normal practice to me. How do these compare to sharpening a saw?

Resharpenable saws or throw away saws?

Just noticed Ollies and AJBs replies. Thanks both. Japanese saws... something I definitely need to try. I’ve got a table saw, band saw and circular saw with homemade track. All very handy for general work.

Resharpenable saws or throw away saws?

Thanks for the replies so far. I started out turning wood about 5/6 years ago but in the last year or two I’ve been combining this with furniture making to create stools etc. I’m working mainly with wych elm due to some big trees coming down in my folks garden. It’s great grain but sometimes a...

Resharpenable saws or throw away saws?

Hi all I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on whether it’s worth investing in resharpenable saws when you’re reasonably need to woodworking. Some of my current ones (general purpose and tenon) need replaced and debating investing in better quality ones and files. If you recommend that way, any...

    Forstner for chucking bowls

Hi An old woodturning tutor showed me that it's fine to drill a 50mm hole using a forstner bit for the chuck jaws to get a bowl started. Now I've got a big pillar drill I'm keen to give it a go but my memory is rubbish and I can't find anything online about it. Before I go and buy a decent...

Best place to buy epoxy resin?

Hi aye I've been working to get some epoxy resin but not sure which one and where to buy it? Some on ebay you can buy for £25 for a litre (600ml resin to 300ml hardener so 2/1) but others are £25 for 500ml resin and 100ml (5/1). Any thoughts would be welcome. Cheers

How would you seal these wood blanks?!

Hi folks I'm still trying to get to grips with preparing blanks. I've turned these pieces of elm into manageable pieces but I'm not sure how to seal them. Any ideas? I've been sealing the ones I cut up with the chain saw with a plasticy paint but I'm reluctant to do that with these as I...

Dealing with small cracks/holes? And best finishes?

Thanks for your help. I'll give it a bash and maybe post some photos to show how I get on.

Dealing with small cracks/holes? And best finishes?

Hi I often find small cracks/splits/defects on my wood and I'm wondering if anyone can give some ideas on how best to deal with them? I've included some photos of an elm bowl that I'm working on that has a few splits around a pith (inside) and a tiny hole on the out. Also, I'd be interested...

Where can I get door handle metal work??!!

Hi all I'm fairly new to woodturning but I thought a good first main project for me would be to turn new door handles for every room in my house. I've made a few testers but I cannot source the metalware, e.g. the brass rose and the 'shaft collar'?. The photos show the only nice wooden one...
