Timber, which is best for....

Hello,

Currently making a blockwork shed, before I go any further I need to make a window frame for glass I already have from an upgrade to plastic (easy maintenance), I was wondering what type of wood is best to use.

It will be south facing and I live in the NE of Scotland, so weather is harsh up here....

I've been pleased with the performance of douglas fir that I used for my workshop door and frames (no windows in the building). It's been in 10 years and saturated with "full lead" creosote when new and is fine.

Thanks Myfordman, I was thinking more of a hardwood to match the doors/frame. Basically I am using old glass and doors from before our extension went up. However the glass was originally a bay window, so I need to align the 3 together in one new frame.

I have no idea what the original door frame is made from, but it is a hardwood (or redwood??)

Iroko is the most durable, readily available hardwood.

Could you get hold of a "red hardwood" window frame of suitable-ish size from one of the double glazing companies, and cut it to size? Can't recommend any particular firms, but there are a lot in Yellow Pages. Or maybe ask on Aberdeenshire Freegle if anyone is chucking out something appropriate?

Dick,

I will start from fresh with the frame, the 2x smaller windows at the side have frames, however the larger centre piece is glass only. It will need to be custom made, which I don't mind doing, but curious as to which timber to get....thinking either Meranti or Iroko.

It would help if I knew what the original frames/doors were made of. Might call the firm tomorrow and see if they are still in business.
