I have made a memorial board out of oak, names will be added using gold paint, my query is what would be the best way of finishing the oak, Bill.

Do a few test pieces. Perhaps a lot will depend on the actual paint but I suspect many coatings will be OK. Try Shellac first, as good a place as anywhere to start. You may have to decide if you want to pore fill the Oak.

Do you mean the names will be carved and filled with gold paint, or the gold paint will be added over your finish, or the names will be added and then your finish will be applied over all?
