the skill of these guys who have nothing is amazing, just the one chisel and marvelous foot control. At the end of the day someone will beat him down to £5 for the complete chess set.
 
Just as impressive in the flesh, he's not the only one in the souk and surrounding alleys doing similar with the minimum of hand tools.

+1 Seen in Marrakesh two years ago, what was very obvious was that the tool [a skew :shock: ] was very sharp and the wood not very hard. The speed of turning showed the amount of practise.

The ironic thing about all the 'authentic' tourist fayre on sale in the souks is that most of it is supplied by a wholesalers in the south of the medina, which is also open to tourists. Plenty of older genuine items for barter [it's rude not to] but just about all the newly made stuff is mass produced elewhere.
