Evening everyone,
I recently went on holiday to the USA, to the New England area.
Whilst in the area, I visited the Lie-Nielsen show room, and went on a factory tour.
Whilst I was there I took a few photos and thought I would share them with you.
I didnt take any photos of the factory, as I didnt want to put off any of the workers with the flash of the camera!
Here is the shop sign, and the front of the show room. This building also houses the storage, assemly, blade grinding, and cryo treatment rooms

On one of the benches there were a pair of dovetailed parts. Judging by the DVD's next to them, I believe they are from Rob Cosman.
I wish my joits are as good as this some day!

Now whilst I was there I thought it would be a shame to not bring a few things home.... so please prepare yourself for a shameless gloat.

The keen eyed among you will notice that the 4 1/2 smoother is fitted with a york pitch frog  As soon as I get back to work I will be looking for every kind of exotic that I can now tame!

Looks like you had a wonderful time, Matt.
Congrats on the goodies and thanks for sharing the pictures.
Philly :D

I guess you would need to have an understanding wife, were going on holiday to the states to visit the LN works, ok dear.

Could you let me know how you get on with the shoulder plane I have been tempted for some time, is the mouth adjustable like the larger version (073) I think.

Hmm, I find this thread gives me a sharp stabbing pain in my envy gland...

Yes I'm the same    this thread should have been locked before the first pic went up

I'm very impressed with the actual building - I love the new-england style of buildings. If I ever get the chance to build a large house/workshop I would definitly do it in the colonial style.

Nice tool porn aswell!

I've got the medium shoulder plane and it does indeed have an adjustable mouth. The small shoulder plane does as well.

I've only had mine for a few weeks but I'm quite fond of it.

cheers,
Dave

With the exchange rate, are the planes considerably cheaper here in the US?

I'm not sure. You can check the UK prices at the axminster site. The current exchange rate is about 2 $/bps.

The axminster price is about $260 vs $175 here in the states. I'm sure there's a steep shipping charge and an import tariff to keep things fair.

Be curious to compare that price with a Clifton 042's price in the states and in the UK.

I recently went through this and there are a couple of plus and minus. Lie Nielsen themselves won't undercut their resellers so their price is top. I found I could get cheaper in the states but they wouldn't post to UK or didn't have all I wanted. Axminster ran at about 20% dearer than Lie Nielsen direct by the time you add postage and VAT and our own post charges. I bought from Classic handtools who were doing 10% less than Axminster so it worked out to about 10% more than Lie Nielsen direct all included. I also had the chance to see what I was buying first in a retail environment.

Matt, I really think you should now change your screen name to something more appropriate like:

Steve (trying not to drool all over the keyboard)
