I recently liberated some old planks from the loft of my mum's house when I was adding insulation and a floor for storage. I remember putting these planks there as temporary walk space, oh maybe three decades or more ago.
I finally decided to use them to make a puppet theatre for my great-nieces. As I was cutting them up I noticed this:
I realised that these planks must have originally been shelves from the library of the polytechnic where my dad used to work. (probably replaced with boring metal ones)
When I planed them up a bit to clean them I saw that the grain was quite nice but I'm not sure what they are.
My first guess was red deal (or larch), or perhaps douglas fir?
What do you think?
I also wondered if they were just old pine. They don't look much like the pale yellow/white fast grown pine we get today (compare with a bit of 2by2):
Comments would be welcome.
