I have made a 5 bar gate for my landlord using green oak. It is not the sort of job i would normally do. If i was making oak doors or windows, i would oil them. If it was down to me, i would leave the gate as is to go silver, but i know my landlord will want some protection on them. Would you oil or would you use something else.

If it's green oak you're gonna have to do nothing for a while so the moisture content gets low enough that you can apply a finish. That's gonna take a while ! I wouldn't say I've given up, but I've taken a new liking to the silvering effect nature has on natural/bare timber.
